>>389827797
I have digital versions of all my music, moron. I like owning CDs both because it's easy to just insert a CD of music without having to copy it from one medium to another, it comes with physical artwork, lyrics, and information on who wrote and produced the music, and if you're that anal, it's also uncompressed.

The reason why it's fucking stupid is that the console is physically able, and enabling it to play these CDs is trivial for the developers, yet it's still disabled.

It's nice that you're that young that you'll just swallow whatever bullshit that platform developers feed you because you parents will just pay for whatever stupid flavour of the month format you cry for.
>>

>tfw enough room to collect records, book, movies, and games for centuries without worry

It's honestly really nice and it kills me that more. people can't know this joy. I fill my house with things I love and enjoy, and it feels so much more lively because of it. On topic though CDs are gay, if you want audio quality download 220 or V0 for the sake of space, otherwise archive in FLAC but it has no bearing on audio quality. If you like owning media, vinyl records are so much better than CDs because of the tactile nature, the far larger artwork, and the social aspect if you ever have guests or friends over (which I rarely do but I enjoy the art). Vinyl doesn't sound better than digital unless the album was mastered for analog, but I enjoy the warmth for some music more. Records are. obviously far superior for collections than CDs though, because if you're going to have a lump of plastic hanging on a shelf you may as well have one with bigger and better artwork to look at.

>>
>people actually falling for the FLAC snake oil
>>
>>389828489
Implying a CD from the 90's would still work today.
>>
>>389828706
It's best for archival purposes, but I'd never use it for regular listening format on my phone or mp3 player since it takes up too much space. I dont usually bother with FLAC unless it's an album I love enough to have backup archival of just in case. There's no discernible sound difference between it and 99% of music in 320 to 99% of people, even audiophiles. Hell the audio difference between V0 and 320 is so negligible it's worth the extra space difference too in most cases since you're not likely to be using monitor tier cans or buds out in public if you're concerned about storage anyway.

Ultimately it's critical for archival, but anything else and it's bullshit.
>>
>>389828420
>records, book, movies, and games for centuries without worry
Unless your standards are abysmally low or you want to replicate Walmart you don't even need a big room for stuff that's worth collecting.
It's 'gotta catch em all' attitude where people stop caring about the content and only care how neatly the shit looks on the shelves when it starts being a problem.
>>389828758
If you don't abuse them like leaving them in car glove compartment during hot summer days or use them as coasters scratching them in the process there's no problem with old CDs.

The only arguement in this thread thus far is "LOL WHO USES CDs ANYMORE - USE SPOTIFY"

What about people who have a cd collection before audio streaming services were a thing?

It doesn't sound unreasonable to want a basic function to work on a console.

Fucking PlayStation faggots, man.
>>
>>389830850
>What about people who have a cd collection before audio streaming services were a thing?
You'd think they had some superior way of playing them and none of them was waiting for PS4 so they finally can listen to their collection?
>>
>>389826915
CDs have much less compression so support wider band of frequencies. Streaming quality is the worst. Digital formats like MP3 and AAC are better than streaming quality but still can't touch CDs. But vinyl is still the audio master race, but like PC, it's expensive. For best experience you'll need a good turntable and speaker cabinets made from the right lumbar species, and you'll need the right speakers which is subjective because everyone's ears are different and depending on the style of music desired speakers will be different.

tldr CD has better sound quality and for some people that matters.
>>
>>389828758
I have CDs from the 80's that are in flawless shape and work as such. Also all my PS1 games still work. How stupid are you to think CDs for not that long ago don't work anymore? If you don't scratch them up bad, CDs will last the average human lifespan.
>>
>>389828758
Are you fucken retarded, m8? Maybe if you're some fat slob of a ugly fuck who leaves discs out exposed to the elements they may not work. Otherwise an officially manufactured disc from the early 80's should still function today. I've literally never seen a problem with a CD (or DVD) not caused by some poofter who let it get smudged and scratched.
>>
>>389829701
No. CD has wide frequency range than 8 track or Cassette. Vinyls are master race tho.

People should realize that streaming = delivery mechanism, not quality.
Sure some streaming services are fucking this up and compressing the shit out of audio but the faster the internet becomes overall, the less issue it will be.
If you wanted to stream uncompressed CD quality audio 150 kB/s is enough (150 kB/s = 1.2Mbit which is like really slow DSL pipe)

Is there any reason why not?
Like, I have many artists whose complete work in FLAC take more than 20 gigs, like Bach or Mozart or even Tangerine Dream. Wouldn't it be convenient to have all of it in a single disc instead of the 6 gorillonz packs?
The too much space argument wouldn't work with 1000H+ of high quality format music in a single disc.

sony's hedging physical media being of less and less importance.
and I personally don't disagree. obviously it's anecdotal but I don't know anyone who's actually bought a fucking physical DVD or physical CD in years. Introducing that hardware would raise costs (however tiny the cost raise might be) and it's thus worthless as a feature, especially if almost no one's gonna use it.
like backwards compat. It's shitty it's not in there, especially for PS1 since it's so easy to emulate. But ps2 and ps3? totally reasonable that they decided to forego it. Have you seen the incredibly tiny list of games for xbone? shit's like 90% stuff that has remasters/ports already, the rest is call of duty and exclusives. If you have the exclusives you probably have the actual system still, come on.

Where are 5 meter in diameter gold-platinum-iridium-Xi baryon-antimmater cables with extra-super-godlike insulation perfected by using Minovsky physics technology? You are a true audio connoisseur, aren't you?

What do you consider a physical succesor? DAPs are made exactly for that.

Hell even a classic iPod will do the job.

For what fucking reason do you need a CD? That shit can barely hold 2 albums of high quality FLAC.

I have no idea how much time it would take for them to have incorporated that functionality in to the PS4 but no matter how small it may have been I cannot imagine it would have been worth it. Physical versions of music are niche as hell now and the few people who would want to play music on their PS4 of all things would be fine with using spotify or even Youtube. Anybody who still owns and cares about CDs most likely has a CD player and sound system specifically for that purpose and would have no real use for that function on a PS4. Why would any audiophile want or care about being able to play CDs on a game console nowadays when there are so many other, cheaper alternatives made for that specific purpose? It'd be a feature that would be used by such a minute part of the audience that it would be completely pointless to bother with it.
