I never got into any of the atelier games except Meruru. Probably because it's clear what you should be doing, and there is noticeable progression or something? I don't know but after trying out the Arland trilogy and a bit of Escha, Meruru is the only one I actually finished

Meruru combines the objective-based focus of Rorona and the open-ended exploration of Totori. The former keeps you on a bit of a leash with its time constraints while the latter drops you in the world with basically no guiding narrative until you're halfway through the game. Meruru takes the best of both games and finds a happy balance between them.

I intend to pick up a PSVita someday and play the older games, but I've never played an Atelier game before and I noticed that there're two newer ones on Steam.

They don't seem to get much love though. Will I be ruining myself if I play them first? It could be awhile before I pick up a Vita.

I've only played sophie from the new trilogy but it was by far worse than the arland trilogy. They cut a few mechanics, made the progression in the game a joke and was generally just worse. If you've never played the series it might leave a bad taste in your mouth but if you plan on playing the others anyways then you can try it out.

Sophie is a good game if you aren't an Atelier fan.Its basically a relaxing version of Recettear where instead of selling goods you collect in a shop, you use those goods you collected to make things as part of quests.
