and yeah OP, the actual main draw is worldbuilding
if you like that you're golden, but if you've no interest in learning about the setting you'll probably get bored and quit minutes into FC

It's a grand story spread across two games, the first one is more about sinking yourself into the world and getting to know the characters.

If you value story and world/character building then you'll love it, if you demand instant action then no, stick with dark souls.

The game is not for you, that is one of the most important things about the game.

You can fully enjoy the games without speaking to any optional random npcs, however it's a lot more fun if you find a few per city that you enjoy so you can keep up with them throughout the two games.
It's a very slow game either way (the first one at least) so if you don't like the main characters (besides joshua since he's shit til the second game, but estelle is so good she evens it out) then I wouldn't bother continuing. There isn't too much story-wise during the first game, so you really have to like the character interactions to be able to tolerate the game.
Also, find a way to speed up the game. Obviously you could emulate the psp version and use the turbo mode there, but if you buy the PC version, I think you can use cheat engine or something. Some of the combat animations take fucking forever (aerial is pure hell) so being able to speed through them helps a lot.

Its very laid back and down to earth, but it has excellent writing, and tons of it too. I don't really exhaust every NPC dialogue either but its always nice to talk to a few, it give the sense that the word is genuinely alive, which is pretty much the main draw of the series, not the fact that there's a lot to read. I'm someone who's always really bothered by bad or lazy writing, but everything in this series feels genuine. I love the setting to, it really resonates with me.
Its true that the game reeeally takes its time, but even then its still good, just different from what you've come to expect from JPRGs. Plus, once shit ACTUALLY hits the fan you'll genuinely feel it since you've spend so much time getting invested into the world and its inhabitants. And boy, does shit hit the fan later on.

You'll be fine for the first game without playing the TitS trilogy. I know Cold Steel is flashier and more acessible and all, so you could get away with playing CS1 as your introduction/appetizer, but at the very latest you should pick up the trails trilogy before going to CS2
