It was great for the time and the story itself is still quite enjoyable but it's easily the worst writing in the sseries. The codec banter between snake and his sexy support bitches is definitely cringe inducing.

Don't get me wrong there's some good stuff ("it's just like my Japanese animes!") but for the most part it sounds like... one of his Japanese animes.

Running through the newly released 1080p patched PC version, there is a few glitches and changes. Some of the 'video' scenes glitch out and are audio only. Plus the game seems to have some mild censorship that make it more like the JP version. Overall though, the audio, graphics, and gameplay feel a whole lot better.

MGS on PSX (ignore Twin Snakes), then MGS2, then MGS3. If you are interested you can try the old MG1 and 2 but you don't have to play them (first) to enjoy the main franchise. MGS4 is the last true MGS game but not a good one so it's not mandatory. MGSV is an abomination that shouldn't exist.

As far as I am concerned MGS3 is the last MGS game.

OP if you're playing it for the gameplay start with TTS or just jump straight into 3 or V
if you're playing it for the story start with PS1 MGS1, MG and MG2 are not required for the plot at all since they're retconned anyways and you get a summary at the start of MGS1
after playing the entire series i can safely say that I only enjoyed the gameplay of TTS, 2, 3, and V
