The fact you can choose what patch version you want is more than enough reason for me to check if gog has it before steam.

I think I have a good 30 games on GoG.
Mostly older games like Dungeon keeper and Anno, that just have the better version on GoG.

But newer games I usually buy on Steam, HB or Amazon.

GOG is great and nowadays I always check GOG before Steam if there's a game I'm interested in, and I sometimes rebuy some games I really love on GOG (STALKER, the old Fallouts). It's just a shame they don't have the Total War series.

I used to mostly take free games or those giant bundles with all the old games from a company but since they started accepting brl I've started buying more recent stuff...it's way better, if you are at a friends home and want to do some fun multiplayer you are ready to play in minutes

I only buy old games from GOG. Steam is still the superior content delivery platform, what with it being the more popular and de facto standard, plus the integration with reviews and forums and guides and friends and whatnot.

I completely moved on to GoG. The only time I ever use Steam is to still talk to the people that I have in my friend's list, FOTM multiplayer games, or if I've bought something on Humble Bundle for a couple of bucks, and even then Humble Bundle lets some of the games play DRM free on your account thanks to GoG.

I see no point in going back. Just to play modern diarrhea? Even GoG is slowly but surely making their way into the modern market.

Steam is a pretty good store, especially considering they haven't had much viable competition. (GOG is a great store but with a smaller selection. Single-publisher stores like Uplay and Origin aren't even trying. Most digital distribution sites are just distributing Steam keys.) While Steam does have competition today, it's still close enough to a monopoly that Valve can afford to do whatever it wants, and yet Steam still manages to be pretty okay. The client has always been mostly non-intrusive, and it even has some good features (e.g., cloud storage for game saves).

Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't complain about Steam. Even if it were 99% perfect, I'd still encourage you to complain about the bad 1%. Complaints from the community are probably one of the reasons that Steam is so much less awful than such a dominant market force could be.

I'm just glad we don't live in an alternate timeline where the Windows 10 store has the quasi-monopoly on PC games.

I use GOG when it's something fucking old and I don't trust Steam's release to support it/hack it for me.

Steam is truly awful when it comes to games that use redbook audio.
