Multiplayer """competitive"""" redditor games with kb+mouse; fun games with gamepad. It's really that simple.
>>
>>389692463

If I don't need full attention I play with a controller.

If I'm fucking your mom I use a keyboard and mouse.
>>
>>389692463
>can it be played with a controller?
>if yes and it's not an fps or rts, I choose the controller

simple and I'm not even a consolefag
>>
>>389692463
Anything that requires accuracy i use Keyboard and mouse.

Platformers, fighting games, etc., i use a controller
>>
Mouse and Keyboard for every game unless the game itself is crippled in some way (bad ports like Overlord)

Exception: vehicle sim games where analogue controls are objectively better
>>
>>389692463
I only play games with a controller when they basically force me to do so by having extremely shitty KB&M features. Stuff like Dark Souls 1 and Nier Automata.
I fucking loathe using controllers otherwise and it's the one thing keeping me from replaying Automata, I don't wanna use a fucking controller to play it and aiming with the mouse is fucking horrible in that game.
>>
I play fighters, action games, and drivers with KBM, and FPS and platformers with a controller. Can't understand the on/m meme with FPS, two sticks for movement is far superior.
>>
>>389692752
>wo sticks for movement is far superior.
How come there's never been a person at a PC shooter tournament playing with a controller when it's so "far superior"?

mouse/kb: anything requiring precision targeting, anything with first person perspective.

controller: anything that benefits from analog movement and doesn't require pinpoint targeting accuracy.

It's usually so obvious that it doesn't even require thinking, but if one had to make a general rule:
>games that focus on movement with gamepad: platformers, 3rd person action games, driving etc.
>games that focus on aiming or menus with kb+m: shooters, RPGs, strategy etc.

If it's a challenging game KBM
controller for comfy ones

KB+M for like any shooter or faggot nerd boring games like mobas and rts
controller for most other things

3d platformers and racing games: controller

Anything else: KB&M
>>
>>389692463
Quick aiming such as FPSs? Mouse.
Quick moving around, such as action hack and slashes? Controller.
I also already played Controller + Mouse at the same time on MGRR, felt the mouse was better for precision cutting.

If it's too fast or cumbersome like an online FPS or an RTS I use keyboard.
For the vast majority of things I use my Steam Controller.
If it requires two sticks (Like Metal Gear Rising) or the camera stick (Like Owlboy) I use my WiiU Pro controller.
If it just needs a dpad and some buttons I use my Pokken controller, or my WiiU pro if Pokken is short on what I need.

Games that are mostly about me moving a character in a three-dimensional space: controller with alogue sticks.
Games where I have to manage multiple different elements or interact with menus a lot: mouse.
2D-Platformers are best played with a d-pad by the way, fighting games with a stick (but I could handle a controller).

Don't really play shooters, so there is that.
>>
Controlling camera with a stick is pure cancer.
I hate controllers.
>>
>>389692463

For single player?

FPS = Mouse and Keyboard
Anything Non fps or 3rd person shooter = Controller
>>
>>389693964
Well, I am not good at mobas because controlling movement with a mouse is unintuitive to me, since I grew up mostly playing with controllers.

But I don't go around calling kbm "cancer" just because I am bad at using it.
>>
>>389692463
I recently realized that batman arkham games are practically unplayable with a controller. Just awful. In fact most games are better played with mouse and kb, you just have to try playing with both to know. I usually prefer to play platformers, hack and slash/beat them up games and driving and fighting games with a controller. Everything else with mouse and kb especially shooters.
>>
>>389692752
Turn off auto aim and try saying that again.
>>
>>389694147
Well, the Batman Arkham games are unplayable mostly because they play themselves, refusing to be played by you. I don't think it's the controller.
>>
I'm just feelin it you know?
>>
I use a controller for everything I can. It's the better device across the board unless a game simply doesn't support it like many older games or strategy stuff.
>>
FPS, CRPGs and RTS, KBM
everything else, gamepad
>>
Okay, let's actually discuss something somewhat interesting rather than make lists of our preferences:

I totally agree that a mouse is very good for aiming, much better than analogue sticks or even motion controls (even if they are actually better than their reputation in this regard).
But there is another thing to a shooter: movement. Movement in a 3-dimensional environment. And wasd/esdf is not very flexible in that regard. As long as you don't have an analogue keyboard or whatever, you will not be able to get as precise movement from a keyboard as you get from an analogue stick.

So what can be done to get the best out of both world? Some weird kind of hybrid controller? Playing FPS games with mouse and joystick?
>>
>>389694259
Nah, I know that's the popular opinion around here. But in my experience when you have like 25 enemies on screen and some have shock batons, shields and all that, you have to know what you're doing to not take damage and loose the combo. And that is when the problem with using a controller arises. You can't control the camera quick enough and to make it worse, it controls itself spinning aroung constantly and desorienting you. Also the bindings for some actions are terrible and you can't change them. It's just so much better and easy to play with mouse and kb.
>>
>>389694870
Considering people have been doing all kind of trickjump bullshit in Quake/Doom/Counter-Strike on PC for decades, a keyboard is more than adequate for "precise movement".

Prime example: "Defrag" Quake videos
This one used to be my favorite, but it's not available with original sound anymore due to youtube being jews. There's download links in the comments though.

>>
>>389695448
I know it is adequate. People have been playing shooters with controllers, so these are "adequate" aswell.

But my point is, could we get better than just adequate? Could we get more precise movement WHILE still having precise aiming?
>>
>>389694225
I did, now what?
>>
>>389695631
analog movement is important sure, in a melee combat game or a fighting game. but not in an fps. Why? because there's no reason to not be going max speed in an fps, unless it's to be quiet, in which case you have a crouch ability. The mouse handles changing direction far faster and more accurately than a controller can. So really there is no reason to use a controller for an fps other than being used to it and not caring about being bad.
>>
>>389692463
depends on how much punching you do

KB&M for FPS/TPS/RTS/MMO's or anything where a mouse will be generally be better like games with a heavy mouse driven interface. Controller for pretty much everything else JRPGs, Action/Hack n Slash, Emulators etc. It's a pretty good 50/50 split for how much I use my controller and my mouse and keyboard.

People vastly overrate the benefits of analog movement. Being able to instantly change direction at full speed is far more valuable than being able to move at a slightly different angle.

>>
>>389694870
WASD has its advantages too, such as being able to instantaneously stop or change directions, swinging an analog stick to the other side is going to take longer than pressing or releasing a button and it goes through the dead zone.

The issue of only having 8 directions to move in is in very large part mitigated by the vastly superior camera control, since actual movement usually results as a combination of movement controls and the camera control. The mouse not only allows you to make very fine adjustments, but it's also quick and accurate.

Switching to an analog stick from 4 keys wouldn't be a straight upgrade in either case, you get analog direction control but lose on agility. Analog direction control is largely mitigated by having a mouse too.
>>
>>389692463
Anything that primarily involves driving with a controller. Anything in which the main focus is aiming with KBM. Although I just started playing Mad Max and using a controller feels awful.
>>
>>389699543
Getting better is a natural consequence of playing even if it isn't an objective. If you keep doing something you will inevitably develop your skill as you adapt and learn from your practical experience. Or at least that's how it works for most people, anyone who has been playing games for a while will have already developed general skill sets for the popular genres which will then act as a base level for new games.
>>
Steam Controller is the definitive way to play any game that involves driving and shooting like GTA.
>Full analog triggers
>Get the benefits of mouse aiming and most of the accuracy (As much as you'd need at the very least)
>Can put sprint on a backpaddle (SO nice)
>Jump works well on the camera pad or backpaddle
>Move both stick clicks onto the face buttons so you don't need to fuck with that shit
It's a GOAT setup
>>
I pretty much use KB+M for everything unless it's a genre that's just better with controller like fighting and shit.
