As mentioned many times before, PUBG is held up as basically the best battle royale game to date, mostly because it boils it down to the most critical parts (salvage equipment on the ground, kill other players in an ever-shrinking arena, can leave immediately if your game is over).

It's the most important multiplayer game since WoW. WoW wasn't the first MMORPG, but it was the first one to be a runaway success selling millions upon millions of units, and every MMO afterwards was compared to WoW and adopted many features from it.

I think it's been a case of right place, right time. They've swooped in at the peak of this Streamer centric, survival arena game type.
I haven't played it, but it seems like a reasonabley put together game that caters for the people who like that sort of thing.
I don't think it's going to stay as popular but I think it won't disappear either.
