Gotta say this, I wasn't very fond to 2.5D when they first announced it. I was certainly glad to have an official remake of Metroid 2 but the graphic in the first trailer looked pretty medicore to me. But as more and more gameplay footage are coming out and they all looked really fun to play, I do think 2.5D is a proper evolution for the 2D platform Metroid games. It's a shame it was limited on 3DS's hardware so we couldn't see its full potential.
That being said, I'm a little disappointed how they removed the blurry effect on space jump and the screw attack's effect looked also cheap compared to their 2D version.
Other then this, I can't wait for Sep 15th to come. Already preordered a Samus 3DS as well.

I was watching one of the gameplay where you found the spider ball. That room's brown yellowish color, structure texture, the background atmosphere and music just screamed Prime to me, which is definitely a good thing.
Also that diggernut, or whatever that thing is called boss fight we saw few days ago also reminded me Prime bosses as well. The way you stun it with your weapon at first, then slowly tearing it down by parts just felt Primeish for me. It's funny cause I was actually replaying Prime 2 that week, so it automatically reminded me about Quaraxis and Amorbis I just faced few hours earlier.

It's more similar to a Castlevania than a Metroid gameplay-wise. Difficulty-wise I'd say it's similar to the first three Metroids, but it's been a while since I last played those and I might be remembering them wrong. It's also very moody, much like most Metroid games. It's different in various ways (gameplay, overall mood, the upgrade equipment system, it has a storyline), but it's still a very good metroivania. It's also quite Souls-like in setting.

Combat is mostly melee with magic proyectiles. Open ended metroidvania design, optional powerups and stuff.
They took a cue or two from dark souls so expect corpse runs and bosses with patterns that you can't just tank.
The lore-story is vague and hidden as well.

I've played all of mercury steam's past games and I've seen their solo project Raiders of the broken planet, and they're all shit.
Lords of Shadow 1 was the closest thing they had to good. Mirror of Fate proved they can't make 2d games very well.
