I was forcefeeding my Chao a shit ton of drives and now anytime I go in the garden it IMMEDIATELY tries to die

I just stopped caring. I had other saves on that memory card, and they still work over 10 years later, Sonic was the only save I had a problem with.

I remember bullying one Chao of mine really hard but then getting really upset when he died.

People say that Chao Garden standalone game would be fun, but I think its the action stages that helped to break the monotony of raising chao sometimes. So I think action stages are pretty key to keeping a Chao Garden from turning old. I guess they can add minigames though, but idk
