You'll have the most fun if you try to complete battles in as few moves as possible. Paper Mario leaves very little up to RNG, so it's just a matter of matching up the right attacks to the right groups of enemies.
Also, the combat gets much more developed once you get the Quick Change badge, which is I think around chapter 3 or 4.

There was this one that an anon posted webms now and then in dev threads/agdg but he has vanished recently. Another PM-like project with gameplay that is still going is paper bugs, but it doesn't use mario characters

It's harder to get into it if you start playing it now.
The last time Paper Mario was relevant was before 4chan existed.
Although, still, it's objectively the best Nintendo game.
