Also, he didn't have the charisma. Evidenced by his lack of dialogue, odd moral choices and overall apathy. He has a weak will, basically doing whatever Kaz says.

Also, he wasn't as good as Big Boss at combat, but he was almost as good.

They hypnosis didn't really change his skills or personality, just replaced his memories and gave him different motivations.

Also, the entire franchise is about legends being more than a single person. It is team work, with a charismatic face at the top. A metaphor for a game company.

I'm still mad that the twist wasn't that we were actually playing as Solidus. It was already established that he was training child soldiers in Africa in the late eighties, and the reveal would have had way more impact than "hurr turns out you were actually playing as some fucking nobody medic who just happened to be in the helicopter with you during the crash."

Imagine if the hospital was actually full of Big Boss clones being slaughtered by XOF, it's survival of the fittest and the survivor gets to be real Big Boss' personal bitch. He's watching everything alongside Ocelot and Zero while smoking a cigar, it's basically an MGS version of The Truman Show. The hospital is actually a clinic Zero had made for making Big Boss copies, which kind of explains the statue of The Boss and the fact that there are so many FOBs out there being led by their own Big Boss. Kaz and Ocelot are just a projection, and Quiet is an actor who gets pulled out before they can get too close. The 'From the man who sold the world' tape is only sent to the winners/survivors before being pitted against each other.

While not talked about, how Big Boss came back in MG2 after everything got nuked in the first game was speculation, one of which is that he was never on the island or had a body double

As much as I wanted this to be the game that let us experience Big Boss's descent into hell and his personal war with Zero, we were never going to get it. Has it ever explicitly been stated/proven that Big Boss committed atrocities such as genocide or killing children? That's a shame, I absolutely adore this game, I love scoping out enemy territory and being an operator taking out assholes.
I picked up the game again recently and I'm still amazed at how well they nailed down the shitty afghanistan terrain and living.

The point was that the legacy of Big Boss was bigger than him. In the end, Big Boss wasn't even good enough to fill in his own legacy (as in, the hero worship seen by us the players and the characters in the narrative future of the series). Turns out, with memes, anyone can be tricked into believing and spreading rhetoric of an idea, and Venom Snake is proof you can copy those ideals into human form.

MGSV is actually pretty compelling, because it plays into (and plays with) the fanbase's own emotional attachment to how they idealize Big Boss.
