It's more like a third and Duke's Archives and New Londo are, for the most part, inoffensive albeit pretty short. Tomb of the Lost Giants is pretty bad and Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith is downright awful but anyone with sense just goes to the DLC area after Ornstein and Smough and ends the game with Manus rather than Gwyn.

Game is a literal 10/10 if you do it that way.

AotA is very consistent with the Artorias, Kalameet and Manus fights being some of the best in the series. It's also roughly the same length as retrieving the four Lord Souls so it works out nicely.

I'll give you Gascoigne, I forgot him about myself and I also think between both base games that Logarius is my favorite fight even though I think collectively DaS3 has BB beat. He requires you to stay on your feet regardless of what range you're at with him making him one of the fastest paced bosses in the whole series, he is susceptible to parry cheese but if you don't do that then it's a 10/10 fight.

The biggest thing Miyazaki did for Souls was apply his sociology degree to the multiplayer and invent the invasion/co-op/pseudo mmorpg feel of the online functions in the game.

they definitely suck at everything related to programming and optimization. For example they can't seem to implement their DLC content into their base games; the DLC is always 99% contained entirely in a separate new area accessed through one little link (usually just a new cutscene trigger) in the base game, then accessed again through a bonfire / tombstone

With BB for example, the DLC adds all these new weapons and blood gems but you cannot find any of them as drops or treasures in the chalice dungeons like you can with the base game ones

From Software might have already made games that inspired the Souls series, but history wasn't adding up to much when Demon's Souls was first in development (around 2006). Internally, it was considered a failure.

It took handing the reins to a man who had joined the studio in 2004 to save it. He was unusual in the Japanese development scene. He'd left a much better paid IT job for US company Oracle to be there, but was 29 years old and had no prior experience making games. From Software had been one of the only places that would take him.

He started as a coder for the Armored Core series but when he heard about the troubled Demon's Souls project in development, Hidetaka Miyazaki was ready to make his name.

"Demon's Souls wasn't doing well," Miyazaki told Simon Parkin during a profile interview for The Guardian. "The project had problems and the team had been unable to create a compelling prototype. But when I heard it was a fantasy-action role-playing game, I was excited. I figured if I could find a way to take control of the game, I could turn it into anything I wanted. Best of all, if my ideas failed, nobody would care - it was already a failure."

He changed almost everything about it. We talked to Miyazaki in 2010, shortly before the European release of Demon's Souls, about the development of the game.

Today, many years later, Hidetaka Miyazaki is president of From Software - an "unprecedented" feat, remarked his script editor Ema Kodaka - and has just released his "masterpiece", Bloodborne, on PS4.

He remains unusual, hiding himself and his life from the limelight, the cameras and reporters. Yet at only 40 years old, his is a name we're likely to hear about for years to come - praise the sun.

DS2: 360 (unconfirmed), ported to PC and PS3
DS3: PS4, ported to XB1 and PC


DS2 runs on the same PhyreEngine as DS1, but uses Havok ragdoll physics, lighting, water, and cloth physics. However, I'm not sure it was designed on PS3 or 360 first.

I'm guessing 360 since it shares so many programming staff members as ACV/VD, which were definitely 360 developed (the PS3 versions actually were patched to have downgraded graphics to compensate for the problems caused by filters first developed for the 360 versions) though.

Demon's was originally a cheap Elder Scrolls clone and developers were assigned to it knowing that there was little chance of it succeeding, so upper management didn't care.. SOTFS uses the same engine as DS2, but with slightly different lighting I think. Otherwise identical, just ported for DX11, PS4, and XB1 compatibility.

DS2 was originally supposed to be a PS3/360 game, so I imagine they intended for it to run at 30fps until changing things later in development. Given that it was their first 60fps game and they DID patch out the bug later, I think that it's fair.

As for tying things to framerate, a vast majority of From games do that, including Armored Core. Was never a problem before because they were console exclusive and consoleswould play at the same framerate regardless.

But this does lead to problems where one poorly optimized graphics process will slow down the entire game because it's waiting on the next frame to be able to determine the stats necessary for the player to input controls.

AC is a huge victim of this because it has so many parallel processes going on, the PS1 games ran at about 20fps and the PS2 games frequently dropped to 15-20 fps in some missions.

It makes me kinda sad that there must exist somewhere copies of the exact lyrics written 100s of times. They got an entire fucking orchestra and choir for the soundtrack. There's probably the original versions in english or japanese as well written down somewhere, since I doubt Miyazaki (or whoever wrote these lyrics) is fluent in Latin and just came up with them as is.

Bloodborne and Demon's Souls have the best soundtracks in the series.

DeS is very simplistic and fits the look and feel of the game perfectly.

Bloodborne is extremly well produced music, much more complex (its a actual live orchestra which is really rare for video games) and each song has actual lore relevent lyrics in Latin. Bloodborne is a much more graphically detailed game, and everything in it is much more fluid. A DeS style soundtrack would sound silly, same with the reverse.

Dark Souls trilogy is somewhere in between, theres some great songs, but as a whole they dont suit the games as much as DeS and BB do.
Soundtrack is the biggest notable difference that comes with Sony funding.

Honestly it's not that bad, once you get used to it. I beat all 3 games with a controller initially, but I have to use kb+m when I play at work. Doing jump attacks/guard breaks can be inconsistent, but the camera is actually better, and the input delay is lower. Either way is fine as long as you've got a decent control scheme configured.
