If I much prefer when an NPC can die, but they can also actually defend themselves or at least act semi-intelligently

Depends. If they exist for a good reason and they fit right in the gameplay than they‘re fine.

The laziest mechanic I‘ve seen is probably ‘enemy variation‘ where the developers just slap a different color scheme on the same mob, give them more health and shit and call them new enemies.

What's really wonderful are escort missions where the AI is scripted to prioritize what you're supposed to be defending over you. With shit like that it's like the AI is designed specifically to troll you, throwing out any illusion of self preservation for the sole purpose of fucking you over and pissing you off by making you have to reload a previous save or checkpoint

The mechanic is fine in Siren. Even though it's frustrating a bit it actually adds to the difficulty making you have to plan a lot more thoroughly.

I actually gave up trying to beat the last mission of Infected for the PSP. You have to defend a single retard that runs around randomly from hoards of zombies coming toward him from different directions. The frustration was not worth whatever sense of satisfaction I would have gotten from succeeding.
