what are the best/your favourite indie games that emulate gameplay and aesthetics from the late 80s and early 90s console era? I'm a big fan of Axiom Verge and Freedom Planet.

I really tried to like Freedom Planet but stage design and enemy placement become a mess about mid point and the bosses are a chore to fight. This may be less of a problem if it didn't attempt to portray itself as a 2D Sonic clone early game.

I seriously live Shovel Knight. The gameplay is some of the most fun I have had in a platformer. Not only that the developers at YachtClub keep giving Shovel Knight free DLC like 2 Player COOP and new playable characters.

Today's the day. I liked it so much I ordered the switch special edition.
Shovel Knight and Axiom Verge. There might be a couple more, but most others fall flat. Like, as much as I like Binding of Issac Rebirth, it's a complete failure at looking like an old game with its rotating and scaled pixels.
I wonder why there's such a mixed opinion with Axiom Verge. I loved it, but there are a lot of people that call it total trash too. It's not like Shovel Knight that gets universally praised, and rightfully so, but I still think Axiom Verge should at least be liked a bit by everyone.
Cave Story
Kero Blaster
Nuclear Throne
Spelunky (2008)

Shovel Knight is too easy it puts me to sleep.
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is my favorite retro-style indie.
