Popular games are just ones that manage to allow the largest amount of people to have an enjoyable or addicting experience.

Currently the hip way to do that is to provide easy ways to take turns being powerful and never allow for situations where a player gets destroyed so hard so often that they stop playing.

Games like Quake/UT/etc all have you get fucking ruined by gregor for hundreds of hours until you yourself become a god. It goes from extreme frustration and no fun into pure fun and no frustration, well beyond what any other game can possibly provide.

But who wants to invest hundreds of hours into a game to feel that bliss? Instead its better to hook more people with lower highs and higher lows, making the game less rewarding but not as frustrating for unskilled players.

Skill-based matchmaking, cooldown abilities and snowbally rpg elements are currently the hottest way to do this. It just sucks for the people willing to put the time in to become untouchable as their experience is lessened.

Halo 5 has some of the best MP in the series and the best forge.

It's also more of an arena shooter then Quake Champions is since it actually has even starts

I played pro CS 8 or so years ago, play semi-pro now. Never really played any arena shooters. Jumped into this and it's definitely fun, got to play against some top pro players already and you can really appreciate the technique and skill they have, and it's pretty obvious how to get better (quicker weapons switching, map control, prefiring etc).

It does suffer from a lot of potato servers, which make the game utterly unplayable (feels like 5 fps when you have 10 ping & 250+ framerate) and there's some real questionable netcode (rockets doing zero damage on a groundshot, rails not connecting, the troll nailgun).

I'd recommend it though, especially as free-2-play. I cashed in a CS skin to buy the champs pack because I wanted to get working on rune unlocking immediately but Ranger is one of the best characters anyway for a beginner so F2P works.

If you're looking for a way to get into 1v1 esports QC is a great bet.. it's going to be heavy supported and it's not the hardest to get into.

I run it at 150-300 fps in ultra (1080p) on a 1060 gtx 6gb. The performance on some servers is silky smooth, others it lags like hell so it's really just a server issue. One thing, you do need a good upload (i have 30mb) due to the ticrate the game runs at (i.e. linear with fps).
