VIII is my current favorite.
nothing makes the series standout. that's sort of refreshing in a way. it's just a solid ARPG, in an era where everyone tries to be cute and clever, it feels decidedly like a ps2 era rpg. I miss those days.

Ys: Oath in Fallujah is the best in the series, followed by Origin and then Ark of Napishtim.
Ys 1 and 2 are unplayable by comparison, and Ys 7 is a bad compromise with more standard JRPGs.

2 is best but if you're only going to play one game oath would be the safest bet. If it looks too dated to you the newest one Ys VIII comes out next week.
