It sucks but can't do much bout it besides hope against hope that the shitty trailer I call home doesn't get destroyed in the storm while me and my family seek shelter. It would be a really big pain in the ass to find a temporary place to live if my home gets blown away.

>>
>>389368003
You should be taking the car and riding the fuck out of there.
>>
Just a reminder to anyone in the path of the storm, if you are in a mandatory evacuation zone, you do not have to evacuate, but if you choose to stay, rescue and medical services WILL NOT come if you call then during the storm. You will be on your own. So unless you are really sure a cat five won't decimate your home, please evacuate, for your own safety.

Oh, don't worry, Floridanon. Irma will skirt around the southern edge of your state (which will still fuck things up), regain strength to a Cat. 5 in the warm waters of the Gulf, and will then slam into New Orleans with enough strength to make the Mississippi River to flow in reverse.

I'm glad our houses aren't made out of cardboard like in the US but our power infrastructure is really shitty even without a hurricane. We haven't been hit by a strong hurricane in like 20 years so we've been lucky but I didn't expect a cat 5.

We haven't really been at risk since 2004, and even then that was just one or two CAT 3 hurricane which didn't do much other than knock dead trees over and take off everyone's roof shingles. Media outlets want to stress how strong a natural disaster can be to inform viewers. Some could say it's fear mongering to keep people watching as well as buying overpriced supplies. Native Florida residents have heard all that shit for years though so we always brush it off each hurricane season and now we might actually get a CAT 5 so it's kind of surreal right now.

>>
>>389375141
Nobody really knows. It won't even be here until saturday into sunday and how fucked any particular location is depends entirely on when and where it makes the last minute turn north. If it even does, tracks keep pushing it west.

We might get lucky and see it fly into the gulf or it could ride the center of the state all the way up. In which case literally everywhere gets hurricane force winds.

What's there to be terrified of? Just find shelter and whatever supplies you can bring and whatever you want and can carry. You can't stop the storm, so there's no point in being afraid. If you survive through it, it's just a matter of picking up what's left and trying to return to normalcy afterwards. Cuba goes through this shit every year, and they are still trucking. You can to.

You're only allowed to buy flood insurance if you live in a designated flood plain. It's illegal to try selling flood insurance to people who don't need it. If you live in a flood plain, flood insurance is mandatory to own.

Unless you completely own your home. If you don't have a mortgage, you don't need to have flood insurance.

At its current estimates it would barely be a CAT6. It's only Cat 6 if you extrapolate the scale like a retard and just add the difference between 4 and 5 to 5. But that's not how the scale works, with the exception of 1 to 2, the difference between each category increases significantly. It's barely at the top of where Cat 5 would end.

Flood insurance is a fucking scam anyway. Two years ago congress tried passing a bill that made flood insurance policy holders responsible for covering FEMA expenses. It spiked my flood insurance up to ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND US DOLLARS a year. No one could ever afford that so after massive backlash congress eventually backpedaled but I had to go without flood insurance for a good six months because it was an impossible amount.

A really, really big tornado formed over the ocean.

Wind is moving at 180+ miles per hour. If you were to suddenly get hit with air that fast, it'd be equivilant to a car slamming into you.

It drops about a half a grown man's height if water on the ground. Everywhere. In the street. In the river. In the pool. In the sewer. A sponge can get wet, but it doesn't infinitely hold water.

The wind is strong enough to flood coasts with five stories of water.

Imagine a palm tree being impaled with a street sign.

Shit is nutty.

I hate to say it, but one of the better outcomes, from a collective point of view, is for this to hit land and stay on land. I'm in Texas, but I exist on the frayed edge of absolute disaster zone. My area was very nearly part of it long after the storm passed simply because of drainage and the threat of the Trinity backing up from all the crap going down it.

Harvey was so fucked precisely because it didn't stay on land. Stayed too near the gulf and picked up water. Then swooped back out and back in to hit more of Texas.

I was living in this same area for several hurricanes past. One of which we had to have food and water aid packages sent to our area regularly. I still remember going down to the fire department to pick it up. That said, that was purely because the wind had fucked up the power lines for weeks.

Losing power infrastructure for weeks/months is fucking terrifying, but after the first week the anxiety dribbles off a bit. Flood will steal your home and everything you called your life forever.

It took roughly two weeks before any outside assistance came. Poloce forces and local military were struggling with maintaining shelters and fighting off looters and shit. Gangs were hotwiring gocarts and drivint them up and down the highway. I remember hearing sporradic gunshots for about a month before I saw Meals on Wheels and tent cities regularly. FEMA was a disaster because red tape was at its worst. They've learned since then.

>>
>>389377576
It's less the rain and more the wind. They're super massive storms with sustained winds of at least 74 mph (119 kmh). That's sustained winds. They can gust even stronger. When you have winds that strong, they literally push the ocean around and will change the sea level (basically). This is called storm surge. We had a hurricane come through when I was a kid that moved the shore line up half a mile. That's why you see beach houses on stilts/pilings.

So yeah, everything that was half a mile from the beach was LITERALLY IN THE OCEAN. This doesn't count for the massive amount of rain and the tornadoes that spawn.

Yes. Texas, and to an extent Florida, are huge. A storm like Harvey hitting further up the east coast would have drowned several states completely. They'd just be fucking gone.

Only reason we aren't removing stars from the flag as we speak is cause Texas and Florida are big. We get to soak up the blows for the rest of the country.

Deep breath.

Harvey was particularly nasty cause it lingered in ONE location. If it had just barreled inland and kept going, like every other fucking huricane that ever existed, no one would be talking about it now. Sure, one or two coast areas are gone, but half the state wouldn't be fucked.

It lingered on one spot and kept raining. Worse, it was still half over the gulf for that whole period, meaning it could feed itself with more water. Not gaining strength, but the amount of rain NEVER eased off.

>>389378616
Read here.

One of the better scenarios for everyone is it just barrels on through and you guys can move on with your lives. Probably massive amounts of damage, but it might not be as bad as Harvey.

Of course anyone living on a beach city should probably move out due to storm surge.

Harvey hit CAT 4 just before hitting land, and it stayed half on the gulf to prolong it's massive amount of rain. Sack of shit literally U-Turned back to the gulf on the fucking spot over the course of a few days. Then headed BACK INLAND.

It was not a normal situation.

That said, Floridafags on the extreme coast or on the southern tips should look for places to shack up north NOW. Even if your place ends up safe, take it from someone who was in Harvey. The worst feeling is wondering f you'll be flooded in at any moment.

Hasn't been one too bad since the late 80s or early 90s, I was too young to really remember it, but it was bad enough to lose power for over a week. I don't think I've lost power for over ~8 hours from any snowstorm in my adult life, and those happen like once or twice a decade. Now the roads get shit every year, and shoveling sucks, but it's not like our state is going to be submerged into the Ocean any time soon.

Anyone in southern Florida, pack and prepare now. I know you've got plenty of time, but you don't want to be stuck in a lurch when it's obvious you SHOULD move out. Streets will be packed with cars. Stores will have already been bought out floor to roof. Gas stations will probably be empty. Get your supplies NOW, and plan where you want to flee to NOW.

And keep in mind, if you wait too long, you won't even be able to buy a hotel room further north. That's what happened here. Even the safe locations were no longer safe cause everything was barren or all free space was packed with fleeing people. After long enough, stores couldn't refill cause all our grocery trucks came from Houston.

Even resort to relatives you fucking hate. Take it from a Texfag. It's more stressful staying in a location that MAY flood any moment than it is staying with shitty relatives, and at least you'll have power and warmth.

You can be safe. You WILL be safe. If you make the proper decisions now.

>house goes up for sale next tuesday

>hurricane might destroy everything I own sunday
I wonder if my friend will let me crash at his place for the weekend... He's vaguely further inland than I am but his house is like 17 feet above sea level while mine is like.... 2 feet above. Honestly all I need is my laptop, some various electronics, and enough clothes for a week and everything else I own could get destroyed and I wouldn't notice.

I feel like the murder might be quicker. Or at the very least you might be able to reason with the murderer and be like "Dude, before you kill me lemme call up an escort and pound this bitch raw dog before you end me."

this storm is literally perfect. extremely well organized annular storm with only minor impediments ahead of it. solid, massive ring of convection (red) makes for a powerful eyewall. no signs of a eyewall replacement cycle (yet) and there's plenty of warm water and favorable conditions ahead of it. holy fuck.

>Is he cute?
No he's a neckbeard who does not own any gaming consoles but one computer running Windows 95 with only 2 emulators.

>Are the aliens cute and sapient?
The aliens look like 15 ft Cicadas that have 6 packs and Rambo size muscles. No sexual organs, they multiply by thought.

Wrap your guns with towels and place them up high along with electronics. DO NOT THROW OUT lawnmowers/weedeaters/atvs if they geet flooded. Simply change the fluids 1-2 times asap after flood water recedes. If you have a carburated vehicle it can be saved as well. The more electronics it has the more 'gremlins' will pop up. Change all fluids ie gear oil, oil, trans fluid and antifreeze. Buy calipers, an alternator, air filter and wheel bearings. Rip your interior out and stick a sspace heater inside the cab after thorough cleaning. Our floodwater was absolutely disgusting but contained no salt water which might present a problem for those of you that live on the coast. Drain your gas tank as well.
