Why do shitty fan projects all of a sudden get so much praise? Is it because of Sonic Mania? I mean alot of them are pretty good, but are no way near good enough to actually compete with proper games.

Sonic Mania is the best sonic though. AM2R is one of the best metroids. Fans know what other fans want more than companies now a days, at least for series that have been treated like shit for a long time
Play sonic robo blast 2 instead. It looks like shot but it's the best 3D sonic by far

It represents a couple things.
>A super fan's dedication to their favored franchise
>Lack of trust in the actual company to do their own games/franchise justice ("fans know what they want more than the company does")
>A creative outlet that just so happens to take the form of one of their favorite games.
There are situations when fans make something, that companies not only never thought of, but just couldn't do in the first place.
See MetaDoom: if id software made a game, that's just a combination of every Doom game, they'd either forget the mobile games, think the pre-release versions don't matter, think they're not allowed to touch Doom 64 or all three.

I agree that there are fan games that do rival the actual companies output, but it doesn't make all fan games good.

>Fans know what other fans want more than companies
Not really, I mean it feels like it should but it generally doesn't. Consumers have a general idea about what they want but generally don't know how that would be achieved. It has to not only be a fan, but also a competent developer. Taxman and his team are competent developers that could probably make a decent game that doesn't feature Sonic. It goes beyond "what if sonic was open world!".

>but it doesn't make all fan games good
Who is even saying this? Give some examples, OP's pic might be one, but list some more
It mostly happens because companies like Sega can't get their shit together, so games like Streets of Rage Remake and Mania end up better than anything they've done.

I don't have every exact example, but you could start with checking all "X in unreal engine" videos on youtube and I assure you pretty much all comments will be "HIRE THIS MAN THIS IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING X HAS EVER DONE!"
>>389356625
>expecting anything good from youtube comments
Come on anon, you should know better and they've always been like that for however long.

Sure but the people saying those things are retarded and should never be taken seriously.
