The more I see of the game, the more I like it. Apart from the amiibo shenanigans, this seems like a success to me.

However, I'm missing the surprise. Obviously, it could bet that there is a surprise and we just don't know about it yet, but from what I can gather there is no big surprise in this game.

No after-credits scene of the opening of Super Metroid, no Zero-Suit section (which I'm fine with, I'm just making examples), no Prime easter egg, no surprise bossfight like Kraid or Serries, no additional sector that wasn't in the original... seems to be a pretty straight-forward remake. A good one sure, but also a safe one.

Isn't that unlockable content? But eh, I guess you're right... I still wouldn't compare their utility to that of a handheld + games. Samus Returns doesn't even use the Write functionality of amiibos.

Also you only needed the GBA + Metroid Fusion if you wanted to unlock ALL content. If you didn't buy that stuff, you still got some bonus content, just not the Fusion suit. If you want all bonus content in Samus Returns you need 4 amiibos, which cost 60 bucks. If you have an older 3DS, you also need an NFC reader for an additional 20 bucks. And you still got no handheld or game out of it.

I think most people are actually okay with locking "Casuals behind a paywall", at least for non-multi game. Paying cheat-code seems to be one of the right way to design the function of an amiibo.

you'll notice almost no one complain about the Tanks an metroid locator the amiibo provide, here. Same thing with Skins and aesthetic alteration that' doesn't impaxct the gameplay. Most people are okay with those kind of DLC.

Most content that only make sense as the result of a physical interaction with the game also get a pass.

The complain is mostly about bonus content that used to come defacto with the game. Even worst when it's content that is actually already on the disk, but you need to buy an additional thing to get it.

I actually collect amiibos. I'm not anti-amiibo. However, I wanted to buy all these figures. I don't feel like I want the Metroid amiibos, I feel like I need them now. And that's bad.

Smash amiibos had functionality. They allowed for that weird kinda roleplay where you create your own character, train it, upload it to your figure and take it to friends. That wouldn't even be possible without some medium for the data to be transportet on, which are the amiibos in this case.

In the case of Samus Returns, amiibos do nothing but unlock content. These amiibos are basically just packaging for on-cart DLC. Which is bad.

The utility a GBA + Metroid Fusion offers by letting you play a game is so much higher than the utility you get from unlocking a skin in Prime. It's very obvious the unlockable bonus was indeed just a bonus and the main utility was something different. With the figurines, this is not the case. Biggest problems I have are the horrible graphics and how the counter turns into a cinematic button when you do it against bosses. I'm also sure it'll be easier than Fusion.

That's not what cinematic is. it's called special move. Cinematic last at least a a decade or more seconds and are meant to be unique.

Special moves that YOU can trigger yourself, even if in special circumstance, and that you can decide whether or not to activate are not cinematic.
