kikestarter stories?

This just happened, INSANELY successful project that just met its goal 2 weeks ago (initial goal was ~50k, they made half a million), now suddenly and mysteriously, their office was broken into, all of the computers were stolen, the security cameras weren't working that day and now they need to delay the project.

What other crowdfunding projects turned out to be scams in the end?

Everyone got a single kickscam pass that expired back in early 2011 that enabled you to have a legitimate defense of 'I thought the best of people'. If you didn't use it before that point, you have no excuse for being scammed by kickstarter.

For laughs, does anyone have that image where some game was reaching their funding goal - and then they announced they were hiring Jennifer Hepler and the funding dove like a rock?
>>
I know it was a scam the moment i see how less they pledge to create such ambitious project, there's no way it's real.

I wanted to believe. And I honestly think it wasn't intended to be scam, but rather that the creator just had no idea how to manage or finish a project. Though if those posts about thinking of switching to low-poly 3D style after the game had already been delayed were just there to make scam more believable, I can only appreciate that kind of dedication.

My mate's car (a shitty late 90's Nissan) got broken into a couple years ago. They went in and out without a trace, the only hint was the front passenger door being unlocked for some reason. They made off with a couple bucks worth of change and a broken satnav, which the lad didn't really care about, but the true asshole move was they also stole the practically worthless aux cord for the radio. He really got mad over that one.

That game was such a fucking disappointment.

I bought it right before they came out with the expansion that was the same price as the game, and came with the core game, meaning you needed to buy the whole game again to get the expansion. Then steam stopped selling the core game, only the core+expansion that wasn't compatible with the core.

Such a fucking moronic move, split the multiplayer playerbase too.

The content in the expansion wasn't worth the price of buying the entire game again.

Ruined a franchise.

Re: Legend was the first thing I ever backed on kickstarter. Backed at a high tier, too, with multiple plushes and shit. I figured the game was in a pretty good place already because it had appeared in a Nintendo direct before thr kickstarter was even announced, and they were asking so little.

Shortly after, I started planning an expensive vacation. I realized my pledge was going to be charged shortly before I left and ended up cancelling it so I would not run out of money on vacation.

It's the last day of my vacation now, and I have almost exactly the amount of free spending money that I had pledged to Re:Legend initially, and I'm going to use it to have a great meal and see a show and have a fantastic night. If I hadn't cancelled my pledge, I'd be stuck in my hotel room playing switch until bedtime all day. Reading this thread just made my night even better. I really want this game to get made and be good, but it feels great to have narrowly avoided a scam like this.

In June 2012, a controversial new studio, Union Studio, was formed, which falsely claimed to employ former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers.[3] The studio renamed itself to West-Games and opened a Kickstarter campaign, looking for US$50,000 to produce Areal, a spiritual successor to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.[4] After reaching US$64,928, two weeks before the funding closed, the campaign was suspended by Kickstarter, stating contract violation.[5] It was later revealed that West-Games acted out fraud, having employed no former GSC Game World staff and tried to crowdfund a now cancelled Adobe Flash game.

Yeah, I'll have to poke more, thanks. This is the first time I've ever tried getting commissions so I'm just having a hard time finding artists I like that are open. Ideally, I'm looking for three or four pictures in to 50 dollar range, but I could get talked up to a hundred for an artist I really like. Fortunately, I have shit taste and low standards. Cuisine's one of my favorites and he charges like 20 bucks for a colored and shaded picture last I checked. Don't want hedgehogs right now though.

I also haven't been looking too hard because I still have a couple pretty important design details I haven't settled on. It'd be neat if I could find an artist willing to help, or an artist willing to do a couple mockups (for money of course) but it's a lot of effort.

Moral of any story about Kickstarter, don't fund it unless the people actually have credibility.

"abloo bloo, I'm an indie dev who wants to make my own game"

Again, it's in their best interest, because the more this shit happens and the more audience Kickstarter will lose because of infamy.

I've got two erp characters I've been working on and wanting to get stuff done of. The first is a bratty, shemale, loli, anthro cat girl. Based on a doll (pic related) and I'd like an artist that can draw fancy clothes for that one, Not to mention that a lot of artists don't want to draw loli.

I was also thinking of finally making a pony OC before the movie comes out. Still working on her, but I have a concept, and I'd like one or two anthro pictures too

Theres never any refunds dude. I don't even think the site allows it but I'm not sure about that.

Plus this is shady as fuck. Their goal gets met and instead of working on the game they all go on vacation at the exact same time and they are immediately broken into. They claim the robbers had enough knowledge to turn off all their cameras, but if they knew they weren't being watched why did they leave alot of very sellable expensive shit around like monitors and 6 fucking clocks for some reason.
>>
>>389347343
you gotta love this new narrative that people of color and queers ONLY want to play games with themselves represented at the forefront.

when you think "game for queer people of color" your first thought should be "any video game already in existence", because it's a tad insulting to imply there are no video games that can aesthetically or ideologically appeal to black people or gay people except low-level pandering efforts like this.

celebration of diversity through open segregation of people into categories!
>>
>>389356149
It makes perfect sense. In America if your project is good there are investors around every corner, if you can't get a proper investment for your project that's a major red flag. That's why most successful kickstarters came from other countries like Belgium.

If you want loli artists your best bet is to look on InkBunny which is pretty much where all loli artists migrated after FurAffinity banned NSFW depictions of underage characters. Just keep on mind that some artists have busy schedules due the website being full up the ass with pedos and other degenerates. But depending of the artist's popularity getting a slot shouldn't be too hard. DeviantArt isn't a bad choice either and some artists post their SFW loli art over there but keep their NSFW somewhere else. But if you want fancy clothes this artist might be of your liking: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/eberry/

She isn't expensive but keep on mind her commissions are currently closed.

I am not into ponies so I can't help you there. However Pony artists are everywhere so finding a decent artist shouldn't be an issue and the one I linked is into them anyways so there is that.

Board games are the only thing you should ever fund on kickstarter

Decent ones will already have the game's rules 80-90% done when putting up the project for funding, and you can usually tell if it's going to be an at least decent game by the rulebook/prototype material on display

>shitting away your money for video game kickstarters
haven't anyone learned from Mighty no.9?
>>
Yeah, all of the circumstances of this "theft" are just too convenient. It just so happens that their Kickstarter recently finished and it just so happens that everyone was out of the office that weekend and it just so happens that someone turned the security cameras off. Then they just so happen to have backups of all the files they apparently lost.

Always assume a Kickstarter is a scam until proven otherwise. Unless we see an official police report, there's no reason to believe the devs.

Ok I need to further explain.
In Sept 2012 the Homestuck author kickstarts its adventure game, with no demo or sketch of what it will be, raises $2.5 million pretty fast. But over time his comic gets taken by a literal sociopath who dated the Undertale author, he became a sjw with no artistic/writing skills and the ending was garbage. All while the game became episodic to be produced faster, changed production team and office 3 times, switched from 3D to 2D and his old development team possibily stole kickstarter money. It also has to come in Linux, Mac and 5 languages shortening more the budget. The only people positive about this product have no sense how much vauable money and time are.

>Holy fuck, how did they go from Pathologic to this?
Partially by just wanting to do something very different and not box themselves in a single creative niche.
MOSTLY because they just wanted to take the absolute PISS out of their audiences and critics alike. Entire CARGO is a a massive practical joke on many levels. They wanted to do with comedy/satire what they did with anxiety and philosophy before.

Except... it just does not work. It's actually just legitimately awful, and it nearly killed the studio. Plus, IPL has always actually been stranding the cartoony aesthetics pretty closely (look up what Knock-Knock looks like).

>>389361492
CARGO: Quest for Gravity.
A game that is literally all about FUN. Those things are - more or less - representation of what IPL thinks of people who claim that the only thing that matters in games is fun. They are not entirely negative characters, by the way.

>>389361692
I know what it is: it's shit. And worse yet: for their entire satire and joke, they still needed at least the vehicle construction and handling systems to work, even if everything else was bad on purpose. The creative aspect was supposed to be the key part of what is actually rewarding about the game (outside of understanding the joke).
And it's not. And it's just all around a frustrating, annoying experience that leaves you with nothing but a "Ok I guess I got the joke but a big joke on lazy consumerism is not worth 8 hours of frustration and boredom".
Pathologic can get away with the "it's unpleasant on purpose" thing, but CARGO can't. Especially since CARGO is a lot more frustrating than any of their other games.

>Aren't they driven by passion to make the game?
Passion does not make good games. Passion combined with skill and good working ethics does. Not everyone on kickstarter had passion, and even less had the skill - and as for good working ethics, those are especially difficult to come across in passionate people.
Normally, these things are better compensated by having conscientious uncreative assholes trying to force the creative, terribly disciplined people in check and those things hopefully balance each other out. But with Kike... there is no external pressure that could REALLY hold you accountable.

There is a bunch of other problems too. The fact that kike generally does not make as much much money as people think, and the fact that in order to gain attention, you are often forced to pander to what people want (rather than do what your heart really calls out for) are two issues that are less often talked about, but also do affect the Kickstarter products negatively.

To make videogames is not like making music, or painting. Videogames are more like a movie or a building: Responsability and discipline are more important than passion. Of course passion and criativity is important, but you can't make a game with that only, after all you wont code in your bed while high with a keyboard in your lap. You need focus, teamwork, and proactive behavior, and lazy indie devs without an iron hand telling then to work surely won't make progress in anything.

Now I can sort of see why they don't bother making a police report. They're usually incompetent and it doesn't really make a difference whether you made a robbery report or not. There will usually be no follow up on it, if they even bothered to come and investigate your office that was robbed in the first place.

On the other hand, the RM2.5 million that they received is a LOT of money here. Enough to get you 4-5 landed freehold property houses outside the big main cities.

I bet there's a law that makes it illegal to stage a crime for PR reasons as it messes with public perception and has an effect on property values of the neighbourhood.
Not sure if it works the same way in the US but in the EU you can report a break-in as third party to have someone come investigate and this way will at least be a police record of any such incident, even if it reflects there was no break-in and the owner sent them away, being helpful in any future court case if this turns out to be a scam.

I was going to make a list of people who were clearly contradiction to this claim, but then I started realizing one-by-one that every single one of these people was only later repainted as asocial, and that they have actually all been very socially active and successful. Was mainly thinking of people like Kafka, Nietzsche, Dostojevskij, Kierkegaard... Yeah.

I must very sadly say, I can't actually find a fault in your reasoning.

No. And even then, there'd be records of when the cameras were turned off.

I'm a security guard for an Amazon warehouse. It isn't even possible to turn our cameras off without completely disassembling them. The only way would be to shut down the server where the video is saved, and even then, the cameras store ~24 hours of footage before their own hard drive is full. The closest thing to 'off' is that a couple of cameras are motion controlled. They're on, but not recording if there's no motion.

That's not what a skeptic is, that's how dumb people think smart people act and try to emulate it.

>how dumb people think smart people act
explains pretty much every thread and post on /pol/. A skeptic follows the evidence, and fully understands that almost everything that happens in life is mundane, boring, and normal. They understand terms like occam's razor and generally give people the benefit of the doubt. They don't immediately conclude that everything is a nefarious conspiracy.

tl;dr You're just a sheep who, instead of instantly accepting the mainstream story without question, instantly accepts the neckbeard internet racist explanation without question. You're both sheep, not skeptics.

Don't know about their building, but all our cables are run through a pipe. There's not any bit of exposed wiring. And the cameras have tamper alarms. It would be easier to smash the camera entirely than to just cut the wire.

And our main server room requires both a keycard and a key code entry and has a motion detector that keeps tracks of entries and exits, so you can't slip in behind someone else that opened the door. Amazon takes this shit seriously. Now obviously, some podunk office building in southeast asia won't have all this security, just saying.

No one else backed that piece of shit hoping for Neverhood 2 and getting one of the worst point and clicks of all time? O-ok...
>>
>>389366346
Granted, I'm no engineer, but my understanding is that EMPs are ineffective when the power source is encased in metal, which is the case with the security cameras. Also, the servers themselves are in sort of a honeycombed chain link box which may act as a Faraday cage, not that I'm really sure what that is. But my guess is that the cameras would still be able to record until their internal battery/internal storage is full. I know their storage is about 24 hours, but I think the batter life is only a few hours. And aside from the cameras, all the doors are locked with a key card reader. They shut down completely and turn into one way doors that allow you to leave but not enter if power is lost.

But something important to note here is that the warehouse stores those robots that move the shelving units at fulfillment centers. Any theft would be for either those, or the information on the server, and both would be ruined by an EMP.

Reading this thread reassures me that /v/ has never had anything stolen in their lives. People don't just throw their arms about and destroy everything like a movie. They also don't nab every single thing they can. I'm not saying they're being honest but you have to carry things home and often the people doing it are so on edge they don't stick around to clean everything out. They break in, grab what they can and think is worth money, and dash.

I heard that on /k/, usually in regards to the smartgun debate, so it certainly could be full of shit. I'm trying to look it up now, but my google-fu's not very good.
