Beat Resident Evil 2 for the first time yesterday and holy shit.

I had 48 magnum bullets. Never used a single one on enemies, AND I saved both the side pack and machine gun for Story B.

I don't know if there were any optional megabosses or anything, but the final boss in the Final Fantasy XIII-2 main story was a massive difficulty spike. Well, the whole final area was a ridiculous difficulty spike that came out of nowhere, and I even had to grind to even keep up with it.
