I haven't really got into the sequel as much as the first game.
From what I know the treasure from the chests that are opened with those keys scales on your level, so you want to hold onto them until you hit level cap.

There's a list on steam forums for cap golden keys along with all the permanent unlockables for shift codes, but save them til max level to spam the chest since it scales.

Golden keys are only useful when you're really behind on gear. You shouldn't even need to use any till the Vault Hunter Difficulty. Otherwise just wait till your level 72 OL8 and then cash in on them as it's all purples.
Don't worry about the DLC till your level cap, as otherwise it's just you doing harder content for no real reward because after you level up a few times you're gear's going to be useless. The only things to note is the magic missile from Tiny Tina's DLC because homing slag nades are always good regardless of how little damage they do on impact.
Lastly, you're playing a game way past it's prime. You really shouldn't be playing this without friends, or just play and beat this on normal and never look back after.

There's still a huge player base for BL2. Just leave online mode on if you want players to match up with you or search games during peak times.

krieg and salvador are high damage but pretty mindless once you understand what to do

axton and maya are for co-op, they have lower damage potential, but are extremely useful in multiplayer

zero and gaige can achieve the same damage level as krieg, but it's a little more difficult or weird

if you're just playing casually, I would go for maya, she is very consistent and has by far the easiest way to slag enemies, which is required in UVHM

gaige in particular requires highly specific weapons to get her best damage, you can do ok with a twister or conference call, but that highly specific fibber is incredibly time consuming to get
