>look up your favourite game designers, composers, artists, etc. of games you loved as a kid
>most of them aren't even working in the industry anymore or are working on casual mobile games

Fuck. Why did I make myself depressed?
>>
>>389332246
You've now realized that most of them don't feel anything special for video games, it was just a job to them.
>>
>>389332246
I wonder if Romero ever regrets letting people know his hobby is collecting gas station equipment.
>>
>>389332246
Romero still works on games

He collects gas station memorabilia as shown in your pic
>>
>>389332382
>>389332459
Wait, is that actually John Romero? I thought it was just a guy who looks a lot like him.
>>
>>389332246
negro who the fuck knew who developers were as a kid?
You just played the game and read a bunch of funny Jap names at the credits without knowing who the fuck they actually were.
>>
>>389332520
yea thats him. he collects old gas station shit apparently.

>>
Ive talked to Romero and he is based as fuck. He signed my copy of Quake and Doom 2. I dont care what anybody says.
>>
>>389332287
lots of the devs for old jap games feel this way

seth robinson made dink smallwood
turns out it even got a mobile port and he is releasing the source code, neat
also married a asian grill and made the new Elliot rodgers

>>
i dont understand how his fps kickstarted didn't get funded? like the most popular fps dev ever cant get an fps game funded? wtf?
>>
>>389334035
Shouldn't have made everyone his bitch.
>>
>>389334035

Maybe people remembered Ion Storm.
>>
>>389334035
Because he didn't have anything to show beyond a pile of ideas. Mighty No. 9 and 3.3 million among others burned a lot of people and made them much more careful about throwing cash at idea guy ventures, having an actual proof of concept helps a lot and Romero didn't have one.
>>
>>389334035
they showed no gameplay and the concept art they showed was so barebones,
>>
>>389334035
He cancelled it
>>
>>389333176
if you've ever seen that show "american pickers" you'd know that shit is actually insanely popular. it's a show about 2 guys who go to people's houses buying old stuff. lots of times it's collectors of old car related stuff. oil cans, gas station pumps, signs, actual cars, and so on.
>>
>>389332287
I mean in the case of composers and artists and such, they probably care more about their art than helping someone else make art.
>>
>>389332287
>people make amazing older games because they need a job
>people fall in love with those games they played as a child
>grow up with dreams of getting into the industry
>finally do it decades later
>make shitty games
What did they mean by this?
>>
>>389332246
In Romero's case, he did a mobile game because his son came up with the idea. That's something.
>>
>>389334035
It was too little. As much as we joke about the kickstarter stuff, you can't just go on and say "hi, back in the 90's I made you my bitch. Fund my game"
>>
>>389334941

It's not entirely their fault. The industry has changed radically since the 90s and 90s, even since the early 2000s.
>>
>>389334941
Some of the old devs were passionate about what games could be. I guess they didn't like what it became.
Also a lot of people who grew with games wanted to work in games, yet they didn't consider that they'd be thrown into the drone section, not actually have any creative control or buddy environment. Just a standard industry.

you live in a timeline where the company that actually gives a shit about producing quality content for virtual reality is not valve, not zenimax, but facebook.

let that sink in.

>>389335263
Yes but there are people like pic related who were big fans of the games as kids, grew up, joined up with the company because they loved games, and then eventually just took a huge fat dump on their own games just to rake in more cash. I guess they just get corrupted by business.
>>
>>389335070

>>
>>389335603
Passion tends to die when the other option is becoming a multi-millionaire.
>>
>Love planes all my life
>After years of studying join a plane related job (engineering)
>Hate planes and anything related to them after years of hard work and problems every day.
>change sector and never touch planes anymore

This was me. Im sure that a lot of old devs dont want to know anything about videogames after working for shitty companies and publishers.

I wish I collected something cool besides old vidya, coins and legos.
The latter two get pretty pricey.
>>
>>389337115
Gas station memorabilia is likely pricey as well. The Doom money allows him, I'm guessing, to just have a room in his house dedicated to the stuff.

>>
>>389335528
no we don't

yes actuially. Of course they are doing it for the money, but Facebook has by far funded the most high-quality VR games

he said he couldn't support himself by just making games in an interview around 2011, but looks like he finally made it recently, cool

>Moving from Cave Story to Kero Blaster has been an interesting transition in my life. In the beginning, I was making various smaller games. After Nicalis helped me sell many copies of Cave Story, I decided to quit my job making printer software and become a full-time game developer. Kero Blaster is the first game I’ve created since then.

It was just incredibly bland, plus floaty jumps that very quickly became annoying. It felt like a sort of 24game jam game, and even that I've seen better.

Technically John Romero still works in the industry. The guy making Dusk paid him to shill his game

I still don't get that. What's so fascinating about gas stations?

Should have paid him to design some actual non-shit maps for the game instead.
