It's been just barely over 2 years, /v/.

Can we finally talk about what went wrong?
Why and how did it come out so shit?
Who thought an open world MGS game with no fucking plot was a good idea?

Why are we still here? Just to suffer?

Konami forced a pre-mature release, just so they could participate in 2015's Xmas season and get rid of the "rebelious" Kojima.

Most of the content is already there. They were just not finalized, implemented, and finetuned. What we got was a mere empty husk of a potential GOTYAY, which in its current form gets worse and worse with every passing hour.

What the game did right, it did well. Open world was fine.

If we had gotten an identical game with slightly more area variation and a good plot, we would have been happy.

Or the open fire fights like in MGS4. Like by doing something in a Soviet Base you can get the Mujahadeen to attack and hell break lose letting you get in during the distraction.

you've been talking about what went wrong nonstop since it came out.
what went wrong is that the game needed one more year of development time, and to abandon the previous gen consoles so they could take better advantage of the current gen's processing power.
the latter was konami's fault. the former may be konami's fault for running out of patience, or it may be kojima's fault for not planning out the development process better. I don't know, I wasn't there.
and most of the plot problems come from tying to replace the codec with tapes. it was implemented poorly in PW and the solution they tried in PP didn't work. Codec worked in previous games because you regularly had to go to the menu, since you used the codec to save your game and also get called up quite often, and once you got used to it you fell into the habit of checking if any of your contacts had anything to say when you encountered something new.
most tapes aren't unlocked until after the mission they are relevant to. there's no button that takes you straight to the tape menu, meaning it takes longer to fire one up, and listening to a tape while still running around doing stuff sounds like a good idea until a firefight and all the people yelling in swahili dominates both the audio and the subtitles, nevermind the distraction of combat itself, and there's way too many 5min+ tapes. with a codec you had o idea how long the conversation would go for, but with tapes you see that length and decide you can't be bothered sitting through it just yet.
this leads to the majority of players only experience a fifth of the game's writing, and a lot of exposition as well as thematic details go unheard.

We needed Venom sneaking/metal gearing through active military skirmishes where his diamond dogs were on the front line and could live or die depending on your actions.

Kojima is a hack that can't manage time nor the budget. He needs someone to push him and keep him focused. He got free hands on this and we all see the result.

The desert isn't interesting
The desert is called what it is because of one particular trait: it's deserted.

Who on Kojima's team thought that basing a game entirely in the desert and some parts in Africa was a good idea? Why not make the whole game in Africa? Africa has shit to see and things to do. Far Cry 2 is still, to me, considered one of the most exciting pseudo-sandbox games because it depicts Africa in a way that makes it seem exciting and adventurous.

If Kojima dropped the entire Afghanistan part out of his game, maybe dropped Liquid out of it too and focused on fighting some other Metal Gear baddie (Diamond Dogs vs Solidus' child soldiers?), then they would have not only had a solid sandbox location that everyone would have enjoyed, they would have had enough spare assets left over after making a fully-featured Africa map to finish Lord of the flies.

Hard to fuckin say. I think MGSV's failures come from a lot of different places.

1. Comes from Konami being a ridiculously oppressive force to work for, keeping Kojima in solitary confinement, making it unnecessarily difficult to communicate with the rest of his team. On top of the fact that the employees were highly monitored and were humiliated for even coming back from lunch late.

2. Kojima being a stereotype creative. Him and his team were very much at the mercy of his creative whims. One of the things he implemented out of nowhere was gun customization. And he probably wanted to do a ton of things, and not compromise with enough of it that he ended getting a lesser product in the end. He also didn't have enough experience in designing open world games, and it suffered from what most sandbox games suffer from: A world map with nothing to fucking do on it.
