It's implied that he lived at least to adulthood in that the hero of Lufia 1 is a direct descendant of Maxim.

Though, Lufia 1 only takes place 100 years later, so he must only be like 3 generations removed from Maxim, so Jeros likely only died within the past 50 years in the time period of Lufia 1.
