Is there still a gaming scene for shoot-em-ups? Or are they

Is there still a gaming scene for shoot-em-ups?

Or are they a dead genre best described as a relic of the arcade days? I don't see the modern gaming public picking up a game like this. It's too hardcore and not enough of a skinner box for casuals and too boring for intermediate/hardcore players used to climbing mountains and stealing cars instead of just mashing one button for 15 minutes.

Touhou is still pretty popular, it's just retracted from the giant boom it had years ago.
>>
>>389315545
Don't most people play those because they want to fug the girls though?
>>
It's still got a fairly relevant indie scene.
Even if the genre is pretty dead in terms of new games, there's an endless amount of content to explore even if you just emulate.

But the real endgame is to get a candy cab or supergun and play for score on real PCBs, nothing beats it
>>
Has there ever been a rogue-lite shmup? I know that sounds terrible to purists but it would keep me going back to the same stages over and over if my ship got stronger over time.

No, those people just look at porn.
There's nothing even remotely fuggable about official touhou art

>I know that sounds terrible to purists but it would keep me going back to the same stages over and over if my ship got stronger over time.
That's the exact opposite of what roguelike typically means though.
You might like something like Tyrian
>>
>>389317021
RogueLITE not rogueLIKE. It basically means a roguelike with training wheels because it lets you keep part of your upgrades after each run. Though usually the game is balanced around the fact that you will get stronger after each death in some way.
>>
>>389317334
>RogueLITE not rogueLIKE. It basically means a roguelike with training wheels because it lets you keep part of your upgrades after each run.
That's not what roguelite means. At all. Most of them don't even have this feature.
"Roguelite" just refers to procedurally generated permadeath games that aren't tile grid turn-based.
>>
raystorm is my favorite shmup in the arcade
any modern game similar to it?
>>
>>389315451
I wouldn't say there's much of a "scene" (I'm thinking in terms of something like the fighting game scene), but you might find very small groups that would discuss shmups with you. I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly content to playing shmups in isolation, competing against my own high scores, and trying to get my 1cc clears
>>
>>389317562
>any modern game similar to it?
No
>>
>>389317523
If you want to be nitpicky, a roguelite technically means a game that is similar to a roguelike but has some key features that are different so they can't be called roguelikes. Though most of the ones I've seen do have a persistent experience mechanic that lets you become stronger with each run in some way.
>>
Last Shmup I played was Crimson Clover. That was pretty fun.
>>
>>389317963
>Though most of the ones I've seen do have a persistent experience mechanic that lets you become stronger with each run in some way.
Most of the popular ones don't. It's not even close to a core idea tied to the "roguelite" term.

It's a garbage mechanic anyways because it completely defeats the purpose of it being a game where you spin up runs and try to win, since you know the game isn't balanced around you winning until you grind it enough.
Your progression is supposed to come from you learning it as you play the trial and error game, not the game giving you more and more power each time you die until it's actually balanced probably.

At least it's not as bad as the game letting you bank money and items to pull out on future runs

I have actual autism and there's a good chance that I'm better at STGs than anyone posting in this thread, so it's probably a requirement to some extent.

>>389320737
See how he bombs every time that second layer of bullets comes in?
It's not actually intended to be cleared normally, its purpose is to force you to save lives and bombs from the rest of the run. It's really more of a test of your skill for the actual game than it is for this particular fight.

Also keep in mind this is a hidden true last boss that can essentially be considered the game's extra side challenge
>>
>>389320737
You don't. You just need decent eyes, memorization, decent reaction time, and
good patience for a challenge.

Also, nearly all shmups/Bullet hell have easy mode that will ease you into its mechanics and gimmicks and give you a good basis to improve on (which will help you with any other shmups as you play).

It's not actually meant to be cleared at all.

No, that TLB specifically is impossible. It's because it was CAVE's final shmup, and they have a long history of pushing the limits with brutally hard true final bosses. They wanted to include something special for their last title, but they ended up pushing it a tad bit too far. The webm above is from a tool-assisted run, nobody's actually beaten Inbachi.
There's always a possibility that someone beats it someday, but to even attempt the boss you have to beat the game absolutely flawlessly, so the chances of getting all the way up to it and then getting ungodly luck are zero.

Yeah, I love shmups. I'll usually buy them if they come out hard copy for a console; they're usually digital only until someone makes a limited run of them.

I usually emulate them on my mini NES or whatever, though. Working on making a mini Genesis, too.

There's like five million of these games on Steam and they all look the same to me. Which one should I play?
>>
>>389326336

Crimzon Clover and DodonPachi Daifakkatsu are the best shmups on Steam. You're better off just downloading shmupMAME and playing the older Cave games like Ketsui and DodonPachi DaiOuJou. They're better games, run flawlessly and you save same money.

Graze Counter is apparently good for beginners as well and is on steam, haven't played it though.

But really you should try the free stuff first like Touhou or >>389326925
>>
>>389326336
Start off with emulating and indies. The /vg/ shmup threads (at least used to) have a download for a big MAME pack that has tons to choose from.

>>389326925
I wouldn't really recommend either of these for a beginner, Crimzon Clover has too much going on and DFK is kind of a shitshow in general. It's really scorefaggy and it's the weak point in the series.
I would suggest Mushihimesama over either of those
>>
>>389318250
>roguelites that have inter-run progression

I fucking hate this shit so much and it ruins them for me unless there's either a mode that lets you ignore it completely or the gameplay's good enough to justify it.
So far 20XX is the only one that fits into either of those, and it fits both (dailies and weeklies unlock everything).
>>
>>389320737
Rule #1 of any decent (bullet hell) shmup is that your ship/character's hitbox is way, way smaller than it appears.
Rule #2 is learn the game's mechanics, scoring, and patterns. You're not gonna beat shit you've never played before on the first try and that's okay. The games are relatively short for a reason.
Really getting into them and getting into pinball are kind of similar. It's just shmups take way more focus to play well, like you've got 3-ball multiball on 24/7 and losing a single ball ends you.
>>
>>389323506
Why does the player's ship stop rendering when the balls are up? Am I blind? Is there just that much particle rape to the point where you can't even see the little ships surrounding it?
>>
>>389325121
I like how the intro theme is basically just the Mario starman jingle.
>>
There is but it's small and will only get smaller. The only way these games will become more popular is if people get too sick of the modern game design philosophy and start looking to the past for something new. People don't even know how the fuck to play arcade games on a basic level and one of the most important aspects of the genre which is scoring is mostly considered irrelevant and archaic although online leaderboards revived interest somewhat.
>>
>>389318250
First time I ever saw the term roguelite used was by Rogue Legacy and I'm actually pretty sure they coined the term. Rogue Legacy does have inter-run progression so I'd say that means the term usually implies it. Only really popular rouge like/lite game I can think of that doesn't really have progression is Binding of Issac and even then it adds stuff to the item pool although it doesn't outright upgrade you. Others like Enter the Gungeon, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Spelunky all give you inter-run progression whether it be stat upgrades or just letting you start from a certain point. Honestly I can think of plenty that don't such as risk of rain and monolith but I'd say a lot nowadays offer a progression of some kind to keep players playing, usually if not for stats then just adding items to the pool.

Look closely, the player gets hits once shit hits the fan, respawns, then moves at the bottom center of the screen. He gets hit again toward the end.

Also on the topic of beginner stuff:
Twin stick shooters like Geometry Wars are a great gateway to other Shmups, though many may not realize it at first glance.
