Even after Catherine was released, they had no HD assets because they hadn't made a new RPG game engine. They said they split the team in half, one half worked on Persona 5 PS3, the other worked on spinoff games like Arena and helped out with Persona Q. Once every project was done, they went back as a full team to finish Persona 5.

Persona 5 started around late 2011 after Catherine was released. Then the earthquake hit Japan and they had a nuclear meltdown, which changed the storyline and development for Persona 5. The original Persona 5 was about going around the world like FF15's road trip gimmick.The bulk of Persona 5 was done in late 2014 and 2015, it was delayed because the team needed to finish the PS4 version which needed new 2D assets in 1080p.

In total it was 4 years to hit the finish line on Persona 5 PS3, with 6 month delay to 2016 for Japan because the PS4 version needed polishing.

Whatever ATLUS game is announced for the PS4, do remember that this is the 4th year of the PS4 and the PS5 is coming out in 1-2 years (PS2 was 2000, PS3 was 2006, PS4 was 2013, PS5 would be 2018-2019). Expect history to repeat itself. Especially with people asking for remakes instead of Persona 6. Especially with SONY forcing developers to have PS4 Pro 4K support, they'll have to rework new assets to on PS4 Pro and PS5.

As someone who has only played 5 and completed it in a week loving it the entire way, is 4 worth it? I would love to play more but I keep hearing that the dungeons were a lot better in 5 and I thought those were a bunch of shitty stealth exploit corridor farm fests
