I'm trying to play Y's 1 right now. Beat the first boss, got to the 3rd town.

purist in me says 1 and 2, it's a great game, but the bumper combat is pretty dated and takes a bit of getting used to.
oath and origin are really great too, but you might miss the bigger picture and background stuff, but that really isn't a big deal. the combat and bosses are what I come to the series for.
playing them in release order gives you a good appreciation of how the series has advanced game to game though. which is true for any series.
