No, they weren't. Most black squads in WW2 weren't frontline fighting units, it was actually common belief that blacks just could not fight in war. This changed during the push through Europe with a handful of black commando squads and of course the Tuskegee Airmen, but they were still largely occupational forces and support troops (cooks, etc).
