Sc2 is closer to other pleb-RTS on the market gameplay wise. Wc3 in that regard could be interpreted as "1v1 MOBA with units and minor base management".

Wc3 is decent though.

Age of mythology is a good starting place, AND holds more "true" to RTS feel; units are meant to die, worker counts are not supposed to be capped, and micro should be about formations, engagement/disengages, targetting etc, not ability usage.

Warcraft3 and Starcraft series are good games in their own right, but take note that they are abnormal RTSes when you play them.

starcraft 2 has pretty good campaign, if you meant campaign by single player rts. wc3 isn't bad, but just not my cup of tea. not much into all that leveling up hero and use items whatever. but a lot of people loved that shit.

if you just want to play against cpu. age of empires 2 and brood war are probably good classics that you can't really go wrong with.
