Competitive gaming is always a mistake unless you can bank money off of it.

I spent way too much time playing and the best I could do is in the 1000s (still bronze)

I just don't think it's worth it anymore, I'm putting that many hours into the game and trying to be a better player. Socially I'm retarded and I've never been good at keeping friends so I don't think a team based game is logical to continue playing on competitive.

I won 7 matches, 1 draw and 2 losses. I was doing good getting up to 1160 after placement but then the bad skills of other teams brought me in the 1000s.

Competitive gaming is a mistake for a multitude of reasons, but that is one.

Imagine trying to draft a pro football/soccer team, except all of your players are chosen blindly. They're all pro players, except you're going to end up with a lineman playing QB, or the goalie playing attack.
Now take that scenario, except all the players are amateurs and if they're playing outside their niche they'll fail horribly. Now you have competitive gaming
>>
I have fun those matches where everyone picks a hero that benefits the team and we speak to eachother on voice chat and joke together.

If you try to play a team game seriously then yes. Only solution otherwise is:
>Play 1v1 game
But most people will then blame the game for their loss i.e:
>I just lost that 1v1 Quake game because of lag!
>Fighting games are random!
and so on.

not possible unless youre playing a 1v1 game, and even then you need a group of people at the same skill level with the same mindset to practice with

grinding your MMR isnt playing competitively either, the only purpose of MMR is to give you an idea of when youre ready to start looking for a team and play in open tournaments/leagues

>"Dude it is just a game".
>Yes, and you suck at it!
I couldn't play that game anymore. This would never happen in football or any other face to face sport. Online team games only work if the whole playerbase is seriously autistic, like with Supcom.

Sure, your rank is a rough representation of your general proficiency at the game, so climbing out of any rank is indicative that you're supposed to be above that rank. You're going to have retarded teammates at every rank because humans are just terrible by default, but if you're the only constant in a sea of variables, you will theoretically reach your correct rank given enough games. That is, of course, assuming the ranking system works, which is another story entirely, and not the point of my asking.

What I was actually asking is what steps are being taken to actually improve. Simply putting in hundred of hours is extremely inefficient, but focused training can do you a lot of favors. Are you recording your gameplay and watching it back, noting mistakes? Are you playing characters you don't know how to play because they seem to fit into your idea of a team composition? Are you actively and consciously working on your weaknesses, or are you letting auto-pilot take over? Have you done everything you can to optimize your setup (hardware, posture, good health, etc)? Are you demotivating your team or empowering the enemy team in any way?

In short, there's a lot more to it than "I'm playing a lot," and I have to wonder what people who are trying but still falling to Bronze are missing.
>>
>>389273606
Yes, instant gratification is so common, people will literally play cookie clicker games over anything with depth.

How much of an imbecile do you have to be to just sit there and press a button for no reason? Even chimps at least want food as a reward.
>>
>>389273823
Fair point. They can try to incentivize accountability with commendation systems and such, but ultimately it won't stick as long as you don't have to play with the same people from match to match.

Solo queuing competitive is almost always going to end up in a bad time, especially in a game very reliant on team dynamics like Overwatch.

There are examples of people solo queuing to the higher brackets, but you have to seriously punch of above your weight all the time AND have have luck with getting decent team mates.
>>
>>389274167
Voice chat is a good step in the right direction IMO, even though CS shows how this is not always helpful. You could also potentially design a system to reward "social" behavior, but that would be exploitable and ulitmately still just a number.

All in all it won't matter much, the way I see it you have to stick to niche games that attract "serious" players who want to play it the "correct" way. Of course a few people play Overwatch seriously, but the game itself doesn't really require teamwork for a "fun" experience, so idiots play it in bigger numbers.

I dunno. OW isn't very complicated. If you play a bit and are observant, you'll kind of get what everyone does generally. I just turn off voice chat and general chat completely because it distracts me. I'm low GM.

Personally my number one thing to consider is "What could I have done differently in that situation to not die/win the objective?", assuming I could have done better at all. It's better to just assume that you could have, for the sake of improvement.

I also practice aim a lot (I prefer to play characters that need aim), the difference between my aim skill is huge if you compare it to just 6 months ago.

I'm not bronze though luckily, I managed to get myself to master most seasons, hopefully I'll keep climbing. OW competetive is a frustrating experience so I don't play too often.
