Not him, I have 15 hours ingame on Steam, it's the beginning of the 5th day as Bachelor and all I've done is walk across town to talk to people while digging through trashcans and occasionally stabbing people at night to get money.
This game would've worked much better if there was no walking and you could just click on the map to where you want to go, and the game tells you how much time it'll take to get there and how that will affect your hunger/exhaustion/etc.

it absolutely would not, for both plot-related reasons and gameplay-related reasons. walking everywhere, learning the shortcuts, familiarizing yourself with the map and the locations and the people in it, all of it gives a physicality to the town that is incredibly important to the game's themes. the town becomes an entity itself in your head as opposed to a series of connected but discrete points. not to mention all the parts later on in other characters where you have to skulk around in the shadows to avoid people when you have low reputation, going out into the vast emptiness of the steppes for flowers, taking shortcuts through infected areas, looting empty, infected, or even occupied houses.

all of that builds on the atmosphere and themes that the game is trying to build, and none of it works if you just click on a map. it guts a major element of the game.

I've tried starting this game up a handful of times, but even with the new translations, I CANNOT STAND the overly convoluted, pretentious rambling of nearly every single character. Even characters in a play don't speak in such a way. And the response options are often downright frustrating.

1. Open up the console during game by pressing ' (that key before the number 1 on most keyboards).

2. Write uspeed 1.33

That means walking speed will stay around 33% faster in the game. Adjust to higher or lower according to your preferences. Notice though that the whole game world move faster, including enemies and time itself. If you want to walk faster but make the world in its default speed, insert this line on console:

gt_speed 3.3

This makes time (and only time) go slower. Again, adjust as you prefer (though this time the higher the number the slower clock gets).

When the infection starts spreading go buy a map from the olgimsky son first thing in the morning so you can plan routes better

Take off your clothes when not in infected areas to keep them from wearing down

Characters can only have one enemy focused on at a time, so wait for pickpockets to attack someone then run up behind them and stab them to death to preserve ammo if necessary

It's not a horror game, it has an unsettling atmosphere for the most part but aside from maybe one or two instances there's nothing scary about it. Except implications. You also lose a lot of the tension and atmosphere by not playing it yourself.

Some assorted tips:

-The first time you talk to a named character you'll get a little introductory talk which doesn't seem to do much beyond establish their character and their opinion of you. If you're talking to them for a quest, you'll have to speak to them again in order to trigger it.

-Named characters will sometimes have side quests for you even if they don't send you letters or invitations, if you've got time to spare or are already nearby, pop into the houses of various people to check on if they have anything for you to do.

-There's a loaf of bread and two milks on a large gravestone in the graveyard north of the Kains' houses if you're desperate for food.

A small town in the Russian steppes comes down with a deadly pandemic of unknown origins. You play one of three types of doctor - a big city fancy science type, a local surgeon versed in traditional lore, and a faith healer girl - trying to find the cause of the infection and its cure, but there's things going on in the town that defy any logical explanation. Things quickly turn to shit and then worse, and then into a free-fall death spiral of awfulness and it becomes clear you're in some real fucked-up shit in a way only the Russians could pull off.

Gameplay is basically survival + the occasional awkward combat + a lot of walking around and talking. You need to balance health, exhaustion, infection, hunger, as well as being low as fuck on resources, sometimes resorting to breaking into people's houses and murdering them for food. It's got a phenomenal atmosphere in terms of oppressive "everything's fucked" and has probably one of the better stories in gaming, one that stands up pretty well compared to a lot of literature. It's also clunky, ugly, and dated as fuck.

If you hate it you'll find out real quickly, if you love it it'll claw its way into your soul and squat there for months. Fun stuff.

It's pretty good, but the greatest difficulty will be finding three other players.
Obviously it doesn't strictly follow the game, but the aspects it keeps work nicely as a boardgame.
There's even some metagaming : the three healer players can easily thwart the plague player by working together and coordinating their actions, so the plague player greatly benefits from sowing discord among the other players, by sneaking in mean comments.
