The lighter blue matches much more with the brightly lit stages, but it also matches better with the ending/opening animations in Mania/CD. Not even the newer Modern Sonic games have him that bold, only SA went for that kind of pallette and that game looked like ass.

Thanks. I'm kind of fussy about color. I used greyscale comparisons for each color to make sure they didn't become too dark or flat. Knuckles is about as light, Sonic was slightly darkened and saturated so the blues didn't look too faded. Sonic was made lighter for this game, it wasn't just the hue. I hope the compromise works.

The street level would be almost entirely flat aside from some card and roadwork areas, but you have to run up fire escapes and take elevators to reach the tops of buildings. The background is roof tops overlooking the ocean. Act 2 is a huge downhill slope that eventually ends on the beach.

Act 1 boss takes place on a window washing platform that is constantly leaning from left to right (think of the platforms in Death Egg). Act 2 boss is a surfing robot CEO that brings in tidal waves and forces you underwater to slow you down.

Act 1's music could be bleep bloop ambient esque stuff similar to Mirror's Edge, and act 2 would have deep bassline and be a clear reference to City Escape.

This is how it starts. Two weeks ago, Mania was the darling of /v/. Today, we're in the shitposting and nitpicking phase, where nothing in the game is good enough.

Everything needs to change. Every little detail is subject to criticism. And as the trivial complaints start to accumulate, and the outside world continues to praise Mania as a 10/10 game, it'll become uncool to like it uncritically. You're an outsider if you don't agree Sonic is the wrong color, or that half the bosses are awful, or that the intro is Tumblr animation.

And that's when it becomes a "Reddit game". Peer pressure kicks in, and anyone who likes Mania is shamed and ridiculed by the hive mind. This is exactly what happened to Undertale, and it'll happen to Mania as well.

The Sonic 2 prototype sprite is clearly just using Sonic 1's head but slightly modified, and the run animation being a dumb swirl looks stupid. Tails' tails don't look like they move powerful enough, so I could tell why they changed it too. Also notice how the detail on Sonic's prototype sprite isn't matching with that of Tails'. Probably another reason why they just redid his sprite.

So what's up with Fang the Sniper? His big debut was Triple Trouble, but he was barely even in that game, he only shows up in optional special stages. Yet in pre-released material, he shows up in normal zones, and appears to interact with Sonic in them. He even has an unused bonus board. Those are S&K sprites. But yeah, those are the best. I particularly dislike how round and bulging Sonic's head is in Mania and the first Sonic games. It makes it look like he only has one set of spikes down the middle of his neck. The S3&K sprites portray the 3D shape of his head far better.

Mania is made by a team of people. It's trying to look like a Saturn game, not a 32x game. Sonic and Knuckles are cyan and pink instead of blue and red because of Iizuka trying to differentiate them from Modern Sonic more. Why are you defending meddling? They're obviously supposed to be blue and red based on the game's animations and promotional artwork. Knuckles is pink in Chaotix because of how the game is stylized to work around the limitations, he still looks red in-game because his shoes are pink too. In Mario, Knuckles' shoes are red while he's bright pink. Sonic is brighter and more cyan than ever. But it's not just the shade, it's even more so the hue.

Frigid Locomotive Zone.

The zone would take place on a train going through a snowy forest mostly because I want a full train level after the train section of Mirage Saloon zone. Act 1 would start with Sonic running along a cliff beside the train tracks, and you would have to catch up to and jump on the train before the cliff ends. The rest of the act would take place on the train. For Act 2 the train will go through a snowy mountain range, and every so often the train will enter a tunnel, making it too dark to see.

I can't think of anything for the Act 1 boss, but the Act 2 boss would be Eggman dressed as Santa Claus flying around in a mechanical sleigh.

Cybernet City Zone

Act 1 - A highly vertical zone utilizing aspects springs/bumpers from Spring Yard, Carnival night, Collision Chaos etc. Palmtree Panic style boosters to gain height. Carnival Night spinning towers.
Visuals take a large pointer from collision chaos, with flashing neon signs being the primary use of environmental art. Think Scrap brain meets Casino night for the tileset.
Background is an updated Genocide City.
Act 2 -
Bad future to end all bad futures. Taking elements from all bad futures across CD, new gimmicks for this level include Death Egg boosters, the one where rings surround the player. Lava is also introduced.
Additional stage gimmicks include scrap brain hazards. Also, the bumpers from the previous level have been set up to push players into spikes.

Act 1 boss
A sidescrolling boss during a lightning storm.
Eggman is using the time stones in conjunction with the Phantom Ruby. Attempts to hit him with end with him teleporting away, as if he was never there in the first place.
In order to defeat the boss, the player must wait for lightning to strike, and then attempt to attack Eggman. He will teleport into a lightning bolt and take damage. Once the player does this 6 times, the phantom ruby will flash, and the storm will stop. Eggman disappears, the background will go dark, and the ACT 1 post will spawn.
Act 2 boss
The Lava Powerhouse music from Sonic Spinball begins. Boss is two phases. The player must begin climbing a pinball section chasing Eggman up towards the second phase.
The final phase is a running section where Eggman chases the player with the instadeath laser, as egg robos and spikes are thrown in the path of the player.
Remix of Sonic 1 final boss music.
The player outruns Eggman, and meets Rosy as a reward. AKA Stardust Speedway. She then becomes a playable character

Sonic CD. Heavy percussion dominates.

It's not throwing out objectivity. This is how sprites work. A bunch of pixels are blended together to give off the appearance of certain colors, features, etc. Look at Sonic, he's not a solid shade of blue. One could even argue he's barely blue in this one due to the off colors blended in. But it's meant to give off the appearance of blue. When I look at it, when anyone else looks at it, they see blue. A bunch of autistic /v/irgins probably see white because there's a white pixel in there.

And if you want to talk about subjectivity, let's not forget everyone in here arguing about semantics, on whether to call light red pink or not

I don't know, I like the S3&K colors. Mania Sonic blends in more than his original coloring did, at least there and in Studiopolis. I really don't think 'it blends too much' is why they changed it.

Haven't played Mania yet, but Knuckles grew on me through his 3&K campaign. If you have good knowledge of the level layouts you can do some huge shortcuts with climbing and gliding in the right place, like you can skip a third of Hydrocity Act 2 by gliding at the right place.

They expose the abysmal camera and collision detection, for one. And why adding resistance to controls while turning when going fast is so important. They had a vague idea that something went terribly wrong by Adventure 2 and responded by making every level mostly straight, but it still controlled like ass. Then you have the game design philosophy of adding automation triggers every fucking where because the game didn't control right, so you had to dash through ring trails, homing attack enemies, homing attack springs to lead into another string of springs, all the dash pads to make sure the set pieces wouldn't fall apart, all the scripted launches with a disregard for air control by never forcing you to control where you land, the fucking rail grinding, the list goes on.

1. I'm not the anon who said she isn't canon. However, it's true that she's not canon in the *games*. The idea is retrofitting Blaze into previous GAMES. In doing so, Blaze wouldn't magically become nude, in order to fit the one exceptional comic/cartoon character: Sally. She would fit the design philosophy of the GAMES.

2. Sally is a western creation, not a Japanese one. And as such, she was granted special privileges. As Sega is pretty cool about localization. They were relaxed with the rules for a long time. So Sally is quite an exception. Not the rule.

3. Regardless of her previous nudity, Sally was be redesigned YEARS ago into a vest. And then redesigned again into a full outfit. Whether you like it or not, the once exception you had, is now uniform to the design philosophy of Sonic.

Think about it like this: Knuckles is red. But due to palette limitations of the genesis/megadrive, Knuckles was skewed pink. Now you'd think with modern technology, they would just color correct knuckles back to being properly red, right? Nah. That's not how it went down. They purposely made Knuckles pink again. Why? I don't fucking know. Probably because the people working on the game are huge autistic nostalgiafags.

But the point is, someone cared enough about the palette that they consciously thought to replicate the wrong colors from a 23 year old game. And we're not supposed to think of these things? We're just supposed turn our brains off?

You don't need to do that anymore, they released a simple .exe file you can use to extract stuff. Just drag the Data.rsdk into the rsdkv5_extract executable and it should work.

An idea I had, what if we used the Toei Sonic color palette and mod it into Mania? I recolored the Sonic 1 sprite to give an example of how it would look. Not an expert, so couldn't recolor Mania's. Thoughts?

Don't know that eactly, I haven't tried editing the sprites yet myself. I'm just guessing here but you can try opening the Sonic1.gif file that's in the Sprites>Players folder and the video shows off going to the Color Table & saving the palette that way.
