Limited palette and sprite size. Every pixel is there for a reason. Modern pixelshit is made with current-gen tools for current-gen hardware so people either overdesign the sprites and end up with ugly messes, or they make shitty sprites because that's what they think old games had and can't be bothered to put the effort in.

Older (good)games were cleverly designed through gameplay.

Idk but Mega Man 3 is one of the most comfy experiences out there, imo.
The intro theme is hype, the graphics are awesome, especially the flash man level.
I miss my NES so, so much. My gameboy too but the 3DS is something I can see myself looking back on fondly for the same reasons. Seriously how comfy is the 3DS?

Man I miss River City Ransom, Life Force, Karnov, Dragon Spirit, Demon Sword.. so many great games. Still fun.

Because the graphics are simplistic, leaving your imagination to fill in the blanks. This is the same reason old skyboxes give you that uncomfortable nostalgic feeling.

in gen 2's case it's just the most aesthetically pleasing in the series. 1 looked awkward, 3 was too plain, 4 & 5 had that awful 2.5d going for it and 6 & 7 are 240p 3d. GSC hit a sweet spot where the series was still 8 bit and Game Freak was more experienced. Same goes for the soundtrack which is one of if not the best in the series due to Masuda & Ichinose having to work around the gameboy's limitations. Only problem gen 2 has is it's gameplay, it's completely outdated due to all the mechanics introduced in later generations. HGSS fixes this but at the cost of worse looking design and music.

Like other anons have said, earlier art is often charming because every pixel placed was thoughtful. If you didn't put care into your art, you would wind up with unintelligible abominations.

I'm crossed between getting an old PSP for piracy & emulation, but I remember the snes emulation being a crap shoot on it. At least with games like Donkey Kong Country or even Killer Instinct.

New 3DS is prob most definitely the way to go. I just want to play games like Super Metroid, never got to it as a kid. That is a dream. To have all those old classics on one handheld. I'm giving the 3DS top credit without having even dipped a toe in that regard. I love it.

3 things make it memorable: Repetition, brevity, and camera view.

Repitition in the sprites- the simpler graphics are easy to memorize and thus they stick in your head. You traverse the same lands many times as you play, unlike modern games which are very big.
Brevity- Individual routes and towns back then were quite small. I'd be surprised, for example, if anyone could memorize all of Lumiose City.

Camera Angle - its the same angle every time. If it looks a little bit different from another camera angle, its less impressable in your memory.

Recently got balls deep in Der Langrisser, Crono Trigger, Pokemon Silver and Kirby Super Star. Terranigma is also a great snes game.

Also those Genesis games are really fucking good. Check out comix zone, ristar, sparkster, rocket knight, and contra hard corps. But as for 3ds games I'm enjoying the fuck out of the star fox 64 remake, the majora's mask remake, and stuff like crimson shroud and resident evil: revelations.
If you never had a gba (like me) check out golden sun 1&2, the fire emblem games, the castlevania games and the metroid games.

I dont remember that spot in G/S/C.

Also yoshi's island is great on snes or gba.

Also super metroid isn't in that list, but I think it actually got ported to the 3ds, so you can pirate it with freeshop normally. But secret of mana, kirby superstar, and live a live are, which I highly suggest checking out.
