Chrono Cross. When Lynx takes your body you get all the evil people as party members who follow / trust your perceived genius, while Dark Serge hijacks your party and pretends to be you and gets them to do bad shit with him. The whole world either respects, fears, or hates you because to them you are Lynx and your story sounds fake. If only they would let you finish the game as Lynx and Co dragging your evil party members along to save the world and teaching them the right of things while your old friends get corrupted by the machinations of an enemy in your clothes

The MC has amnesia, but both the impediment it causes him and the reasons he suffers from it are medically accurate and explained in detail within the game. ...or rather, he pretends to have amnesia because it's all part of a gambit that is revealed during the final moments of the game

How to spot an amateur writer. This is literally the thinking every Jr. writer who's never bothered to write a story at all. Execution is what matters the most, you just gotta let a story write itself and add in the pieces it needs for optimal impact, not create a chimera of good stuff and think that by virtue of doing so, it'll be good.

Take notes on what you liked. And what were the elements of the stories that worked (pay attention to how they mask literally devices, and the roles various characters serve for the story based on how they interact with others).

Create outlines, or jump in and create short proses.

Come up with short generic premises, and use them to create original stories.

Always try to subvert the expected.

Not that guy but it's pretty easy to tell when a video game has shit writing. Everything is completely predictable, characters are one dimensional, dialogue is either robotic or unrealistic, every motivation is a cliche, or there's a fuckton of not so subtle social commentary or propaganda. Bad writing has lots of tells, and most of them are present in most games because the stories honestly don't matter. The Last of Us is better than Twilight, obviously, but even if you compare the lore of the Rainbow Six games with an actual Tom Clancy novel you'll see that video game writers are basically either frauds or not paid enough to waste their good work on greedy companies like EA or Ubisoft.

Tl;dr games usually have bad plots and writing because nobody cares what the story is when they buy a game (premise is everything) so companies don't spend on it.
