So it's basically like every single game made in the 80's and 90's, and early 2000's. There was a time when most games were unforgiving, didn't explain what to or guide you much, and you generally died in a few hits. Mario, Rygar, early Zelda games, 2d Metroids, Contra, etc. Dark Souls didn't do a single thing new, it just behaves like early video games.

Also dark souls has bonfires literally fucking everywhere and in early video games you either couldn't save at all or saving was able to be done very sparingly. In dark souls you walk for 20 seconds and get a new bonfire to trial and error from.
