Gessen is supposed to be a private shinobi school for high class/rich shinobi families, which I guess there might be quite a lot, while Hanzo is mainly a regular school with a small secret class of good shinobi, so it's not hard to think why there's more than one good shinobi school in the country or internationally.
My problem with Gessen is that they don't really have a meaningful link with the other groups, and the ones that do like Yumi and Murakumo feel kind of forced to say the least. I guess there's Ryoubi and Ryouna being ex members, but that is never really touched upon, at least for now.

The more I learn about this series and its lore, the more I believe anything past SK2 was a mistake. Estival essentially destroyed any kind of development the characters had, and I don't even want to imagine what sort of stupidity is forcing the girls and Kagura to play with water guns.

Gessen were supposed to be righteously intolerant Good ninja and that was half their beef with Hanzo--Hanzo girls having actually befriended Homura and other Hebijo evil ninja. The problem being that none of the Gessen girls had that kind of personality. Of course since Hanzo was disguising himself and training them he had a hand in helping his old friend's adopted granddaughters not become antifa ninjas.

also Homura got rejected out of hand because she attacked a Good ninja. or killed him, depending on which timeline you're on. It was irrelevant that he was assaulting her first because GOOD GUYS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT.

It's really lacking, at best you have jump/guard/dash cancels or launchers into aerial raves.
EV tried to not be as braindead as Shinovi Versus, but it feels so sluggish even when you get used to cancelling and some bad desing choices like making lots of enemies with superarmor attacks, nerfing badly some characters and bosses that spam ninpos all the time.
The 3ds ones (specially DC) feel much better to play, but don't expect much complexity.

There's nothing special about them compared to the Warriors games. They're even more simplified than them with no bases to take over, extremely linear and small levels, and less enemies in total. As you'd imagine the girls are what draw people to this series. Probably the only thing unique compared to the Warriors games would be playing dress up with the girls. At least the Versus games.

Senran Kagura 2 is a little different, but mostly the side content like adding in chibi versions of the characters, a sidescrolling shmup mini-game and even preset sizes to make the girls breasts even bigger or smaller. Gameplay wise there is a tag system with two characters similar to with Warriors Orochi, a stone system to make your characters stronger, faster, regenerate health etc. Making it fun to mess around with and completely breaking the game with Haruka, Mirai, or Yomi.

In general Mirai is far and off the worst character in the series outside of Deep Crimson for some reason where she breaks the game with her grenade launcher. Hibari is also pretty weak but isn't that good of a fighter in the first place.

In Estival Versus, Haruka, Katsuragi, Yozakura, Yomi are all terrible. Not just them though since a lot of the cast has been pretty neutered with the overall glacial gameplay and super armor nonsense the enemies have in that game.

I've only ever seen them 'discussed' on /v/ and not once have I seen any actual gameplay

Ikaruga is really clunky and awkwardly sluggish in Burst so expect to get hit a lot. Thankfully her ninja arts good enough to clear a screen of enemies if you're having an issue. She's very good in all of the other games though, especially 2.

I remember Rin being awkward in Burst as well, but I haven't played as her in that game in quite some time so I'm not a hundred percent sure on how she feels exactly. She's very good in the rest of the other games though.

From what I'm reading in this thread, people think SV has a better gameplay than EV. Why?
EV feels a lot more fluid (except for the heavy hitter characters), the new commands like wall jump are fun, and the occasional bomb/robot/creative finish makes the missions/stages less repetitive. I couldn't play 4 SV missions in a row because of how goddamn boring it was, but I played through EV like it was nothing.

I enjoyed Burst. It wasn't great but it was a fun beat 'em up with a surprisingly nice story. I tried Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus, and while EV made significant improvements over SV neither were good. I haven't played tons of musous but out of the handful I tried those two are probably the worst. I hear SK2 is good and closer to Burst, but I don't know if I want to risk giving this series more time and money. Same goes for Peach Beach Splash. It looks alright but I've been fooled before.

You can probably find a look alike for every character if you look hard enough, most follow easily recognizable cliches, and the ones that don't are still kind of generic looking.
Not saying this is a bad thing at all, they can still be likeable on their own, making characters people would probably feel instantly familiar with was probably the best choice for a game like SK.
