play the classic X-COM games, I recommend OpenXCOM, it's been modded a fuckload so you'll probably find what you want.

Also try out xenonauts. I also agree that modern xcom is a piece of shit. With the new expansion the easy as shit faction units make the game easier than mario rabbids challenge mode.
