I think I'm going to pick up a Vive tomorrow.

Rec Room looks fun, Onward and probably Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades.

Does anyone else have one? Are you still enjoying it or does it fade pretty quick?
>>
Saving up my money for one. I'll probably end up regretting it. :V
>>
>>389207541
I'm hoping someone is going to weigh in saying they still love theirs.

Even though everything does look like a tech demo I still think it may be worth while.
>>
>>389208084

I feel like VR is begging for some sort of STALKER or Metro-esque sort of atmospheric FPS. I'd love that.
>>
>>389208483
Any kind of long in depth experience would kill it.

The mobility of obviously an issue, there are a ton of tower defense games.
>>
I have an Oculus
I fucking love it, future of vidya
Also I'd pirate Superhot VR, fun as fuck but has the same problem as the non VR version in that it's way too short for the price

I've had mine for a year now, have been enjoying every second of it. Yeah it's kind of clunky in the beginning but man, there's nothing like it.

The fun games are the games like h3 where you need to actually physically manipulate stuff realistically. Stuff like h3's meat grinder are fucking brutal because you not only need to shoot the gun accurately, but you also need to not drop all your shells on the ground like an idiot, or forget to turn the safety off.

Then there's gorn which is a gladiator simulator. Gorn's fucking brutal, and if you're in bad shape it'll fuck you up bad. Most of the game is learning how to put some force into the weapons without breaking your back. But man, the haptic feedback in that game is surreal, you can actually feel and hear stuff like your sword cutting through the air. The local multiplayer is fucking out of this world as well.

Essentially, you need to devote some time to it, since you're not controlling it with a keyboard/mouse but if you can dedicate the time and train yourself there's a ton of replayability.
>>
>>389209849
That's the same game as OP's pic
>>
>>389210019
>meat grinder
I've been trying to get into it but some of it is kind of unclear
It might not help that I'm playing seated in a small room but it just frustrates me and I end up just going back to the modular range or now M.E.A.T.S.
>>
>>389207168
You should try superhot VR
>>
>>389208483
Look up h3vr's meat grinder mode. It's nowhere near the scope of stalker or other fully fledged fpses, but it's atmospheric as fuck. Now that I think about it it's closer to resident evil but a stalker kind of game would work well with those mechanics.

>>389208779
Mobility isn't really an issue anymore. The "armswinger" locomotion essentially accelerates you depending on the orientation and velocity of whatever controller you hold a button on. While weird initially, it quickly becomes very natural and gives you very fine movement control. It also allows you to position yourself to do delicate stuff in meatspace like go for melee hits or carefully pie a corner.
>>
I think I'm going to go at it with a 4GB RX 480 until the market comes back down or next line of Nvidia cards are out. Looks like this is bare minimum, will this hinder my experience?
>>
>>389210259
Play the updated version, the newer modes are much harder but remove the time limit and add much more weapon variety. To survive it you need to do shit like consolidate ammo types, and stock guns in the spawn room. If you still don't feel it, try the mode that gives you an item spawner.

Being in a small room is suffering though. I upgraded to a 2x1.7m space and it makes a world of a difference

Occulus, Vive and whatever Chinese brand VR headsets have already lost against StarVR. Which is being backed by everyone from movie studios, ACER, Toshiba etc.

StarVR already won and its not even out yet 5.5K screen, 210 degrees of vision, why would you not trust Acer who makes one of the best PC monitors giving them hardware.

>>
>>389212112
What kind of GPU is going to support that resolution?

Also what's the refresh rate? If the refresh rate is lower than 90hz moving around is going to feel like shit and good luck doing anything precise.
>>
>>389212242

For a screen that big it would most likely be 120hz+ but to get that much power into tiny phone monitors is why Acer is helping them out. They aren't keeping this tech to themselves though because they are part of the GVRA group which most probably has some clause that they have to share tech specs for others to be able to complete.
>>
>>389213139
That's not what I asked. I was asking what GPU would be able to output at that resolution at 90hz. Most modern cards would struggle in vr at 120hz with the current resolution. It's likely going to be clocked at 90 because that's where diminishing returns set in, and everything is essentially like real life.

I'm afraid that modern machines wouldn't be able to support this without some form of reprojection, similar to PSVR which would basically limit it to low intensity >180 degree use.
>>

anything around GTX 1070/1080/1080ti

Vive owner for over a year.
I recommend:
>Superhot VR
Best game out there right now. Perfectly designed for what the technology can currently do, and makes you feel like an absolute badass.
>Rez Infinite
The depth is fucked, and the framerate is locked at 60 instead of 90, but this is still an incredibly psychedelic experience, and one of the best rail shooters ever made. Area X (the new content) doesn't have any of the issues the rest of the port has, either, although it only lasts like 10 minutes.
>TheWave VR
Weekly VR raves. Even more abstract than Rez. Cool ways of interacting with other players, and some incredibly trippy stuff to find in the "overworld" kind of area.
>Google Earth VR
It seems benign, but trust me when I say this is worth trying out. It's really something else.
>Blocks
A 3D modeling app, in VR. Also a free Google app. Not as fully featured as most modelling applications, but still really fuckin' cool.
>Climbey
If you can get your head around the controls, this is a pretty immersive experience. Also does jumping really well.
>Thumper
I can't play this one for more than forty five minutes or so at a time, but it's pretty cool. Rhythm game with a real intensity to it.
>The Gallery / Call of the Starseed / Episode 1/ whatever
Don't buy it for full price, because it's really short, but it's a lot of fun solving Myst-like puzzles in VR with your hands. There's a section where you navigate tunnels using a flashlight and a map you actually hold, it's pretty compelling.
>GORN
Get the demo off itch.io for now until the EA version gets more content, but this game is brutal as fuck. You can rip a dude's arm off and beat him to death with it, then pick up his corpse and beat his buddy to death.
>Windlands
If you want to feel like Spiderman, and can stand some janky controls, give this a shot. Give this one a shot when you've gotten over the motion sickness.
>Blueshift
A free demo made in Unity. It lets you fly.

Will post more if I think of them.
>>
>>389216391
Other notable things:

>Dolphin VR
Dolphin, the GCN/Wii emulator, has VR support. It needs a lot of tweaking, but you can play shit like Metroid Prime in VR, which is sick.
>PPSSPP VR
The same, but for the PSP. Try Wipeout Pulse or Pure, or an action game like God of War.
>ReVive
Every Oculus 'exclusive' game can be played on Vive.
My personal recommendations are Robo Recall, Chronos, and Lucky's Tale (tail?) (it's free).
>JanusVR
A web browser in VR. Every site is its own 3D - modeled space, which by default appears as a flat screen in a generic room, but some websites (e.g. reddit) have their own specially designed spaces. You go to different sites by jumping through portals, it's pretty sick and pretty Snow Crash.
>cs dot rin dot ru slash forum
Not software, but a website where I get my VR games if I wanna try before I buy. People share a lot of cracked steam games here, and accounts are easy to make.
>>
>>389207168
I'm so sick of these lazy Madness Interactive character models.
>>
>>389216391
>>389216995
Thanks man
>>
>>389217118
No problem, friendo. My enjoyment with the Vive never really went away, but once the novelty fades, you start to get really picky about what games you play.
>>389217094
You mean the floating torso/head/hands?
That's becoming a VR standard mainly because full inverse kinematics with just a head and hands as tracked points looks awkward at best, and rarely helps immersion.
I wouldn't call it lazy.
>>
>>389207168
I don't have a Vive or PSVR, but I did get to try Rez Infinite in VR and I can safely say that if you DON'T get Rez Infinite in VR, you're fucking stupid. I honestly think it's one of the few good VR games.
>>
>>389207168
I have a Rift and while I love it, I would not recommend either VR headset at this time for the pure VR experiences. I bought it with the intention to use it for racing and flight sims. It is amazing for those but all of the pure VR games have felt like extended tech demos at best.

I'm also not sure what reason there is to get a Vive over a Rift unless you actually plan on dedicating a room of your house for the roomscale stuff.
>>
>>389218414 here
I forgot to mention that the creativity apps like Quill, Medium, Tilt Brush, etc are actually really neat. If you have intentions of using those, VR might be worth jumping into as well.

Not sure if Quill and Medium can be made to work with the Vive though.

>>389218414

anything you find at the top here is definitely fun to most VR owners http://vrlfg.net/

the most popular free games are popular because they're good. especially if you're going to show them to someone who's never experienced VR before. start with the lab.

I Expect You To Die ($25) is a great title nobody ever mentions. really short for the price, but they're working on more content that will hopefully be free. take it into consideration especially if it goes on sale.

Pierhead Arcade tired me out the other night, and when i left to have a smoke, i was feeling like i just had the most childlike fun i've had in a long time. it has almost no multiplayer activity, but granted i've only launched it once. it's $6

i've owned my Vive for a week so i'm still in that early glow of owning a new thing, plus VR is a totally mind-blowing different experience to take in. it definitely needs more work from the hardware up, but it's definitely the most i've been captivated by a consumer product ever. if this goes away it's not because the idea or technology is bad, it's because the research isn't cheap and the consumers are.

Social interaction in VR is the closest we currently have to early internet/Xbox Live levels of greatness. Everyone's usually really friendly, and the novelty of the technology just generally puts everyone in a good mood. Plus, the fantastical nature of most of these games makes the actual process of interacting with other people fun in and of itself.

me and my roommate had some individually independent fun experiences with Sportsbar VR ($20) just playing with random individual people. you can do anything you want to do in that game from playing skeeball coop together, to just shooting each other with ping pong guns, teleporting around whilst guarding yourself from potshots with ping pong paddles, or just throw chairs and shit onto pool tables people are playing on to fuck the game up. i liked how while playing skee ball you can just throw the balls upperhand at the holes if you wanted to or just spawn yourself at the side of the machine and just hand-place them in the hundred score hole. gave me a giggle.

i grabbed a guy's gun that he dropped on the floor and dual-wield shot him in the face while he weepingly guarded himself with his hands and that sold me on the VR multiplayer experience.

I've had mine for over a year and now that I have the deluxe audio strap I love it even more, sure it's not as amazing as when I ititially put it on but bigger and better things for it are coming like Fallout 4 VR, DOOM VR, Budget Cuts and Irrational Exuberance

Also there will be no such thing as a vive 2, the whole process is meant to be modular, in that you buy replacement parts for it like a new headset or new controllers, there won't be like a complete new package.
>>
>>389211014
I've already ended up punching my living room wall like three times playing this while lunging at enemies and had to stop because I was worried I'd break the controllers. The chaperone system isn't nearly enough for this game. I'm thinking about laying down a rug or an exercise mat on the floor so I can recenter myself.
>>
>>389221558
Is it really better than just ear buds or headphones? It's like $100.
>>
>>389221558
>deluxe audio strap

As much as I'm tired of having to untangle wires every time I put on the headset I can't bring myself to fork over $100 for average headphones and a piece of plastic to bolt them on. Oculus definitely made the right choice having them built in.
>>
>>389208084
I have a Rift and yeah it's still rad, there's a honey moon period for sure but the only real bummer long term is that the really good games are just...sparse...Robo Recall, Super Hot, Lone Echo, Onward, H3VR, all awesome but then there's tons of $40 demos a and shovelware
>>
>>389222154

If you do plan to get a Vive, make sure you have a decent amount of space, and good spots to put the lighthouses. What they're doing is using Facebook money to sell the hardware at a significantly lower price point than the Vive.
The Rift was being crushed until recently, mainly because the Vive did everything it did and more for the same price (except the Touch controllers, those are objectively better than Vive's remotes).

Now that it's 500$, it's either a much easier choice for consumers, or a much harder one. Vive had its own price drop to 600$, but it's still 100$ more for full roomscale, worse controllers, and a slightly larger library.

I got Raw Data when it launched for the Vive, and it ran just fine on Windows 7. Did they pull some bullshit for the Rift version?
>>
>>389225078
>>389225085
Okay, cool. Vive and Rift are ~1050 x 1200 per eye, so that's like a 30% improvement. My favorite part of the new headsets is that some have inside out tracking, which is actually really amazing if you think about it.
>>389225102
dude, you sit down and use a controller
>>
>>389225038
I've never had to adjust my straps since I first got the vive. I pull it over my head. Wow so hard thanks HTC here's $100
>>
>>389207168

It's cool tech that everyone should try, but it feels more of a demo of whats to come. The resolution needs to be substantially better. Surfin the net in VR was a joke. I had to make pages huge to be even legible.
>>
>>389225457

It's clear that PC VR headsets are better, but how's the PS4 VR? Is it so far behind that it's not worth it, or is it still reasonable?
>>

>>389226013
Jesus fucking christ. I try not to be elitist about it, but I'm so fucking glad I went with the Vive. It seemed like the best at the time and Oculus just keeps making that more and more true.
>>
>>389226061
It's apparently the most comfortable of the three, but has shit resolution and low fps because of the PS4, as well as the worst touch controls since it's just the Move, and only front-facing tracking.

Cheapest "real VR' set though if you already have a PS4.
>>
>>389226354
Pretty much this
>>
>>389226061
PSVR is pretty good, for VR running on a 250$ box.

pros:
>it's cheap as hell to get everything you need compared to the competition
>multiple great exclusives
>much less shovelware because sony actually has standards
>objectively most comfortable of the three headsets right now, the windows headsets are largely stealing its design
>the aim controller is the logical conclusion to light gun shooters like Time Crisis, I played Farpoint for a bit and loved it (the force feedback is sweet)

cons:
>max 60 fps instead of 90
>tracking is jerky sometimes
>significantly smaller library overall
>slightly smaller resolution but not painfully so
>mostly controller games, move controllers can be used for hands but they aren't that great
>no roomscale
>180 degree play area if you're using any kind of tracked controllers
>>
>>389221836
ur retarded
>>
>>389226559
>max 60 fps instead of 90
I haven't touched anything VR yet. How big of a deal is this? I keep seeing 90fps as some standard for VR.
>>
>>389227014
I have a DK2 and most of my games cap at 60fps, never notice it
>>
>>389227014
My machine visibly drops frames pretty regularly in some games. Low frame rates are supposed to make you nauseous but at least for me it's mostly just shitty and annoying like any other computer game. I'm not sure the 90 fps is based in anything concrete, it's probably just part of some developer's guide Oculus put out a long time ago.
>>
>>389227014
It's a pretty big deal, especially if you're using motion controls. Just looking around or waving your hand in front of your face is enough to notice when you're running below 90 fps.

Of course it's not a total deal breaker either. I've played room-scale games with fps dips down to 20 or so, but it's not exactly pleasant or comfortable.
>>
>>389227014
It's not really a big deal. There's a difference, but 60FPS is still perfectly playable.
90 is just a noticeably higher level of smoothness which makes the experience that much more immersive.
Framerate is so important to VR because it affects your experience so completely, especially when your own body is represented in the game.

All that being said, unless you've got the latest graphics card, some PC VR games can drop frames. Thanks to reprojection, this usually doesn't lead to nausea, but performance is variable. This is less of an issue on PSVR because certification.
>>
>>389227014
It's a really noticeable drop. However, asynchronous reprojection can smooth it out a lot. Even if a game runs at 45fps on my Vive it's actually pretty playable, except that you notice the motion controller's are a bit off and jittery. The view in the headset stays pretty smooth, though.
>>
>>389227014
60 fps vs 90 fps doesn't really matter for game fps, but head movement needs to be 90+ which the PSVR does.

120hz with the game running at 60 fps it the best, honestly. I wish the Rift's screen was 120hz. 60 fps + ASW would be amazing and 45 FPS just isn't enough.

The only thing holding back VR right now is the resolution.
As it is right now you can see the individual pixels which is fine if you can look past it.
Once they find an affordable way to increase the physical pixel density of the screens it will be way more immersive.

If you buy VR right now you need to know what you are getting in to, and that it will inevitably have better versions then the ones currently available down the line.
>>
>>389232135

Did both of those things several times, upon clicking "Activate Virtual Reality" the HMD won't show Half Life 2 but if I look at my monitor it's showing Half life 2. If I look around it'll show I'm looking around on screen but not in the Oculus
>>
>>389232212

Actually the other thing holding back VR right now is the price. It doesn't matter how immersive or technologically advanced it is, you can get a full fucking mid range PC for the price of a Vive alone, which means that only enthusiasts will be interested, and even less will be able to afford it.

I know I'd have a vive by now if it wasn't so goddamned expensive, and I'm not going to settle for an oculus after using both oculus and vive side by side at a convention once; The screen door effect is too shit on oculus to even bother.

Is it bad that I think it actually adds a nice effect to certain games. Like any game where you play as a soldier that's wearing a helmet with a HUD or any game that puts you in a futuristic plane cockpit, I think it sort of adds to the immersion factor.
>>
>>389233838
I like it in Elite Dangerous, makes the HUD look like I'm seeing it through a space pilots helmet.
>>
>>389234247

>>389234247

The absolute best part is feeling like you're there, physically. Whether it's a porn video or a game, being up close to a woman's face and feeling like they're actually a few inches away from you is really something. If you like pov porn, VR can take that a huge step further.
If you've played any VR before and encountered an NPC in a game getting right up in your face, you probably know the feeling, though obviously far less erotic.

>I thought there was futa mods for Honey Select.
There probably are. Check out the threads on /h/, they always have a pastebin with shitloads of recommended mods.

>I want to use it for porn and also toys/games/light cardio/daily physical movement.
If you intend to play VR games a fair bit, it's definitely worth it, assuming you can spare the cash and have a good enough computer. The porn is just a really nice bonus.
>>
>>389240930

>>
>>389240978
>>389240930
Curious, how big is your roomscale space? I'd be working with about 2 meters by 2 meters
>>
>>389241078
That is what I meant.
They sell them, but they cost an arm and a leg. Last I checked was $2000ish?
>>
>>389241170
2 meters by 2 meters as well. Standing experiences are fine but some games require you to have 3 by 3 meters.
>>
>>389241170
Exactly how much space I've got. Most of the time it's fine, though some games make me wish I had an extra half a metre. Stuff like Gorn really needs you to be careful not to move around, otherwise you can end up hitting things super hard. Amazingly, the Vive controllers can take a serious beating, though.
>>
Don't fall for the meme man, use that money to pay for your daughters tuition
>>
Got mine about a month ago and like a previous anon said there's a honeymoon period that dies off a touch, but there is an absolute raft of free shit on Steam that can keep you going;

Onward is fucking HARD but really intense and fun
GORN is my personal current favourite, it is an absolute blast even though it's pretty repetitive
You can always use it extended on games like Elite: Dangerous, Scam Citizen, Euro Truck Sim 2, Racing games (not sure which support it), Subnautica (it's buggy though) and so on.
Rec Room is fucking awesome for a free game so much fun and a really good chance to play multiplayer shit and have a grouse time

I'm not a rich cunt at all so it was a lot of money for me, but I don't regret spending a single cent it's an absolute fucking blast and it's great showing it off to family and friends too. You gotta be impressed by the basic novelty of VR though, if it's unimpressive to you then you'll miss out.
>>
>>389209049
cm3d2 is great but setting it up is a fucking chore and a half, you basically need experience having installed a fuckton of mods weirdly into games before because you gotta do some hectic shit in folders, took me a good 2 hours to set up.
VR Kanojo is just novelty, you'll get a laugh out of it more than a wank.

just google vr porn games
>>
>>389241780
>You gotta be impressed by the basic novelty of VR though
This part is very true. If you've seen enough VR games, understand all its limitations, and still think it's exciting enough for you to spend so much money on it, chances are you'll love it and never regret buying it. If you're unsure, it might not be the best idea.
>>
>>389241940
Yeah exactly, to back up what I originally said further; I had a free Gear VR with my S7 Edge and loved it, used it heaps but obviously it's very limited, but it gives you a good enough idea of what to expect.

Then you put on the Vive and it is something else entirely. The Gear was cool for cinema screens and shit; but the presence of BEING in the VR world, hands and all, is just fucking insane and arguably the most fun I've ever had with games.
>>
>>389221664
Apparently it's just gonna be telefragging as >>389240170 said, however if you want some hectic "glory kills" in melee combat, look at GORN, the latest update allows you to do heaps of damage by slamming enemies into surfaces

>>
>>389241780

Subnautica runs like absolute shit with those specs and in VR mode you'll get motion sickness straight away while stuttering with the fps.
>>
>>389242352

>>389242247
A small carabiner can be handy for hooking the cable to the belt loop on the back of your pants. It's not necessary, but it stops the cable from going over your shoulder if you turn around too fast or bend over.
You may also want to look into DIY pop filters for the microphone for when you play multiplayer stuff. You just cut a bit of sock and tape it on, but it can help quite a lot to stop you breathing on the mic too much.
Other than that, the only stuff I've really done is a velcro cable tie for my headphone cable, but if you're using the audio strap headphones then that won't matter to you.

Really, though, there's nothing you need to bother with at first. You'll figure out small little issues like that once you start using it, then either figure out how to fix it yourself or do a bit of searching.

Do it, seriously.
First time peeing without glasses in the night is worth it alone.
No more smuge glasses, no lost lenses.

You just have to lie still for 23 seconds (2 times) and then watch as doctor remove something from your eye. Then you will hate anything brighter than led for one day and wil have some eye discomfort for 2-3 hours.
Next 2-3 days - new vision. It will "jump" slightly for this time (like when i was wrighting last post, it suddenly drop) but it will last only week after operation.
Side effects - you will see "halos" in night around lights for month-two and will have to use eye drops for month.
