The default pistol is a USP match, designed by H&K, that pistol is a Heckler & Koch Mark 23, also designed by H&K. It's not any more out of place than the default pistol, they're from the same manufacturer.

The rabid rapid mashing of left click to spit out 18 quick hot weak shots in a mad frenzy is really really satisfying. It's an excellent contrast between later weapons. HL2 has a really refined weapon pool of different moods and tools that a lot of people underrate simply because they have niches and aren't all the exact same lout booming epic ownage gun.

I've actually always liked HL2's pistol. Dunno why. By all accounts it should be 'unsatisfying' with it's awful random recoil you have no control over but I enjoy it's plastic toy "pop pop pop!". Killing combine with it at the start of HL2 was always fun for me, but I guess a lot more of that has to do with the ragdolls and that awesome flatline sound whenever you kill one.

The regular shotgun from Nu-DOOM
It sounded like shit, and you couldn't kill anything tougher than an imp, and even then you had to basically be in fellatio range to get the 1HK

Once you get the upgrade for the Super Shotgun that makes shots only spend one ammo rather than two, there is literally no reason to ever pull out the Combat Shotgun.

The best part of hitting 5 into a perk in KF1 was no longer having to hear the terrible 'pap pap pap' of the 9mm starting pistol. Somehow the damage, sound and feel of it is even worse in KF2, but at least that has duel wielding and starting weapons from the get-go to compensate.

probably alone here but i found the DooM 4 super shotgun to be really underwhelming.

I hate the wimpy fucking reload where you just slap it open and daintily put some bullets in real quick with the other hand. They did it just right with Wolfenstein:TNO's double barrel shotgun; you have to break it open and SLAM those shells in.


Honourable mention goes to every other weapon in half life 2 beyond the shotgun and gravity gun

I'd still say it's underpowered. The 3 round burst AUG rifle killed much faster for some reason, they should have rebalanced the two guns and made it so the nail gun shot slower and had less shots, but did much more damage.

Also FEAR really needed to let you find more guns earlier on, you like only get the lazer and cannon guns near the end of the game.

I'd always look for situations where it was effective, sometimes in those BTB gametypes where you spawn with a BR and AR I'd use the AR when I could even if it was objectively worse. It was the little weapon that could.

And I loved using it in zombies gametypes, or against any multiplayer enemies that had no shield. Mowing into other players who had no shield to protect them always felt really good.

I'm just posting this as a template but I really don't like any "plasma" based weapons in any games. Some laser weaponry can be alright but shooting balls of plasma that shit just never satisfied me. Halo, Fallout, even X-Com (I only choose them because they're powerful) otherwise I'll always pick standard munitions.

However the only game that does have a nice feeling plasma weapon is Dead Space but the plasma cutter is just a futuristic saw blade gun so I don't think it really counts.

P.S: not every weapon needs to look like a giant flaming cock, shoot explosive dildoes and play the entirety of "Raining Blood" by Slayer every time you shoot it. it's a low-caliber, mass-produced handgun, and it looks and sounds like one. If every weapon is "Raining Blood Explosive Cock Cannon" then every weapon looks, sounds, and feels the same.

DESU my biggest problem with HL2 weapon design is that you can reload a weapon by switching to another, emptying that magazine, then switching back, effectively meaning you never truly need to reload. Saints Row 4 (which curiously had +mag size and +reload speed upgrades to weapons) did this as well, only with instant weapon switching to make reloading even less neccesary.

I completed it on Hard using only checkpoints (which are much more scarce than in original HL2). That was quite the experience. The hardest parts were inside the facility, lots of walkways where you are exposed to Combine squads, and of course they respawn so if you decide to retreat to the grenade box and stock up on grenades you have to deal with them all over again. You have to be fast and efficient. It made me appreciate the SMG, though. It's not THAT bad.

It was really fun, though. The guy who made it actually got a job in Valve, too bad HL3 is dead, he could've made it fun.

Enemies have twice the HP on Hard in HL1 and 2. I played Steam version and it really doesn't do any HP bloat above what's standard. Note that the first part of the game takes place on a pretty open level, and SMG isn't amazingly effective at those ranges. On a positive side, you find a revolver immediately as you spawn and one or two combines in the end of first chapter carry AR2s for you to plunder.

SMG lost a bunch of accuracy in Steam version, supposedly. Though I played retail HL1 before Steam and I don't remember it being very accurate anyway. Interestingly, Half- Source version of SMG deals more damage, 8 instead of 5, matching Glock's per-bullet damage.
