It was horrendous shit at the beginning (dungeon) and super hard to get into the stats and combat system. But later it was actually fun to check wikis and shit to know what stats and spells and shit do.
Combat is super addictive with all the tactical shit you had to do just to survive the easiest battles.
Its kinda scary how much possibilites this game had. Your own characters literally reacting to you. Companions could go perma dead or leave forever if they hated you or other people in your team.
I read that a paladin would loose its title and be a fallen paladin or whatever and loose skills if you killed innocent people or did gay shit.
My brain exploded when this one guy attacked me and I used charm on him to end the fight peacefully. I simply thought why not. I thought it was a scripted event where I had to kill him, regardless of what I say (anything about charming wasnt mentioned).
There was suddenly a new dialogue because of the charm. Could have tried on other people. This made me literally smug

Don't bother, the PS1 version is the same game with worst load times, and the FMVs barely add anything. The FMVs were a nice novelty back during it's original release. But realistically, they're just awkwardly stuffed into the game with zero substance.(Except the last one)

Linear games aren't bad. What the game does, is it gives you the ability to do wrong. Which is more than other linear games do. For example, when you reach the end of time, it gives you the portal to prehistoric times straight away. You're not supposed go there first. But you have the option to run around that era, if you're dumb enough.
You have the option to kill magus, if you hate him enough. And there is good reason to kill him if you're really invested in the story. Can't blame the game because you feel like meta-gaming and recruiting every character. There's no real benefit to recruiting him either, except to say you have.

The combat is pretty shallow, but it does have enough tricks to force the player to pay attention. If you just spam A and heal, then you can brute force through the game like a moron. But the game punishes you for doing that. If you play smart and strategically, then the experience is a lot smoother.

I can't tell you how many players choose to mash A like brain dead morons. I watch it all the time on twitch. It's so annoying how half the players assume Lucca is awful, because her attack power is low. They never think to use her techs, which makes her VERY useful. Just mash A. Point is: I recognize the battle system does lack enough depth to prevent people from brute forcing. But at the same time, it does reward smarter players with a smoother experience.

And that's where Chrono Trigger accels. It's smoother, streamlined, face paced experience.
