Auto attacks were mainly for building up monado guage. I think they reduce the cooldown on your arts in this one, I can't remember

In X they built up your tension, in this one they build up your elemental art, which lets you use combos

Balance is kinda fucked up in X. For most of the story, your abilities and what the enemies can do are evenly matched, but lategame has shit heavily stacked against you hard. Then you do infinite Overdrive and suddenly enemies have no hope of scratching you ever again. You never return to that early game sweet spot. It's either you fuck them hard or they fuck you hard. No middleground.
