Why do so many games decide to weigh themselves down with gay fucking "plot" instead of focusing on being cool and fun nowadays? What went wrong? Will we ever be able to go back?
Just look at how many retards on this board eat that stuff up. Kinofags are constantly shitting on MGS V for actually being a game instead of a movie. Regardless of how you feel about botw I hope it will inspire other studios to really go back and rethink some of their assumptions about gameplay.
Goddamn is Turok amazing, those last level are so damn good.

They are only wrong when they say games should be shitty erstatz movies.

God what I would do to be a fly on the wall as (((Druckmann))) read that article. His visible agitation must have been pleasurable to all those around him.

Because back then games didn't really need to sell, hence people could do whatever they want when making them since they themselves were making them.
Now everything is dictated by publishers unless you go the Indie route.
On the publisher route, you need to emphasize a broadly appealing story, and doing so in modern markets requires extensive story that doesn't step on any toes of anyone, because bad press will murder you in a publisher's eyes. On top of that you also have to make the game pretty, or else it won't get lots of attention. As such, a lot more resources are designated to either improving style or graphics. Gameplay is put in the back seat since gameplay doesn't sell as well in modern markets
Outside of that, you could go the Indie route, in which case style and marketing are everything. The more people who donate the better. In order to be better at marketing, you have to be UNIQUE. Being unique means you have to focus on two of the main three (Story, gameplay, graphics), since doing all three leads to fucking all of them up and screwing you, because Indie title #496 looks like your game but has X.
You have rare gems of good Indie games who fit the bill, like Risk of Rain and Darkest Dungeon, but if you notice, both of them have story as a tertiary trait. RoR obscures its story within scattered item descriptions and up front telling. Darkest Dungeon gives a larger focus, but also blends the story quite a bit with the style, and as such puts a lesser emphasis on it.
The market's fucked, and won't stop being fucked, since flashy story driven games will now sell better than games that prioritize gameplay above all else.

Compared to modern games. Compare how much the original Mario Bros. needed to sell to make profit to what even Andromeda needed.
