Pisses me off too. I keep fucking over thinking I'm controlling Mario and end up circling around like a retard for a few extra seconds at chests because i briefly forget I'm controlling a microscopic roomba.

Makes me think it's a leftover from the battle engine considering you use it as a cursor, and there's no real difference internally as far as the game knows.
