Even then, careful hoarding of bombers and positioning of corvettes can see you though early space battles against a cocky zann player, right up until they get cloaked frigates with high damage shield piercing mass drivers.

The real hatred is when you raid a consortium planet - send in a squad or two of infiltrators and plex troopers - to remember that yes, you can go unit to unit with an unprepared garrison, but it doesn't matter when the buildings are shielded.

I don't remember the SP campaign in empire at war, but forces of corruption has you playing as the consortium, fighting both the rebels and the empire, making use of the unique units and new planets, hijacking shit. It was alright.
