Is it a mistake putting Samus Returns on the 3DS instead of the Switch?

You say that as if there's something wrong with the 3DS. When there isn't.
The 3D is great.

No, the Switch needs a bigger install base. If Metroid Dread (Metroid 5) shows up on the 3DS by 2019 or 2020 then that would be a mistake.

No.

Larger install base and lower development costs.
No. They wouldn't have been able to shit out the game as quickly as they did had it been on a console instead of a handheld

Bigger issue is that it feels like they waited too long to make it if they wanted it to be on 3DS
Really should have been announced/come out in the place of MP: Federation Force.

Started development in 2015

Who's to say they won't milk people for this, then later release an "HD version" for the Switch in a year or so from now?
Nintendo has never not made a mistake.
Handhelds in general were a mistake.
No, it's a mistake not putting it on both though, the game probably runs on Mercury Steams internal engine which has been ported to other systems, the only good thing about that is that if Samus Returns meets expectations a sequel on Switch could be only 2 years out, I just hope that the devs focus on smooth performance over visuals.
