You must not be old enough to remember WoW at its peak. It wasn't just a game, it was a cultural event. My parents even knew about it. Hell, they made a South Park episode set mostly in the game. 3 million isn't even that much, for a game that peaked around 15 million subscribers.

Cataclysm had hordes of cut content & bad changes because Blizzard assumed people would suck it up & stick around

I think when they were still reporting numbers it was heavily inflated due to the way certain overseas account models worked. Like certain countries used a "Pay X per minute/hour of playtime" sub models, and any account that still had any amount of time on it was considered an activate account for those reports.

Either way I always assumed it was MASSIVELY overblown one way or another.
