Gordon Freeman is unrealistic because he's just a scientist. Adrian makes sense because he's a confirmed badass. If it wasn't for G-man interfering he probably could have held back the aliens all by himself.

I don't think it's unrealistic. The training mode is a cannon part of the first Half-Life. You hear an announcement for the annual obstacle course race while you're on the tram at the beginning. Gordan has hands on training with firearms and knows the entire layout of Black Mesa.

It might do more harm then good in Shepard's case. The HEV suit is essentially a kind of power armor that requires training to adequately use, kinda like that scene from sphere where they try to use oxygenated fluid without training.

The G-Man thinks of Freeman as a symbol of the resistance so he used him as a tool to set up a huge domino fall. G-man said he wasn't paying much attention to Shepherd until he unwillingness to die and thrive in the situation caught his attention. Freeman was a tool from the very beginning. Shepherd wasn't and still managed to be awesome.

Freeman remains remarkable for how atypical and uncool of a "hero" he was at the time.
