It's an alright platformer with decent combat
Story and visual design are probably it's strongest points. Tried playing the HD version of the original and it was super clunky and bleh. Stick with madnes returns

So just skip the first one? I don't want to spoil it by just reading up on it but what I mean is it one of those sequels that it's kind of it's 'own thing'? That's what I was hoping for. The original really doesn't look bad for a 2000 game but if I could skip it I might just play that after if I felt like I could use more.

Sort of surprised I've never heard of this given how many people shit themselves over that Alice in Wonderland movie with Johnny Depp. I saw cosplayers in the mall.

First game has a pretty shitty gameplay imo, so you can pass it. Madness Returns on other hand is a really good game with magnificent designs, if you're in the mood for a psychological trip give it a try certainly.

You can skip the first game. It's not that great. Read the story on wikipedia or some shit first though. There are some things you should know.

Madness Returns is still a fantastic game now. Running it at 4K and it still looks amazing. Just be prepared for the second level. The Mad Hatters level is four times longer than it should be and it's the worst level of the game.

I think you can skip the first.
The problem with the second game is that because EA or because the dev team was a load of idea guys the game feels sort of unfinished.
Too few areas, areas are padded out for too long and there's obvious signs of some cut corners.
