Escapism, amongst other things
People who are unhappy with their current life situation immerse themselves in games, and people who immerse themselves in games too much lose touch with reality

Is it the disconnect with the screen and avatar like people that play as girl characters?

Cosmo and Mofat.
I'm curious for more examples that i don't know about.
>be interested in video games
>become social outcast
>never meet ideal woman
>begin to relate to said ideal woman
>decide to become said woman.

There isn't. Trans people are an incredibly small minority. You just read and hear about them more because it makes for good news. Nobody cares about the millions of normal people that play and make video games, that doesn't make for good headlines.

My guess would be is that transgender people by definition have problems socializing and are somewhat more predisposed towards escapism, and that leads to them being interested in solitary indoor hobbies and activities such as video games and doing stuff on their PC.

It explains the transbians who still sleep with women as opposed to the real MTF transgenders that sleep with men.
Is there? I haven't seen any study suggesting such a thing
Anyhow, supposing there was a link or at least some real factor that makes you think there's a link, a hypothesis that comes to my mind is because one of the greatest differences between men and women is men's interest in things as opposed to people (empathizing–systemizing theory) and transgender women, being biologically male, might retain the male interest in things and systems, and are subsequently far more likely to be interested in vidya (d=1.18, a very large effect size) and are thus grossly overrepresented among women truly interested in that sort of thing. Throw in some other male-dominated traits (competitiveness is obvious, female's greater risk-aversion further steers them away from career paths like e-sports or independent game development) and you'll quickly find that the bulk of prominently featured women are actually transgender, making you notice this phenomenon.

Why is that though, wouldn't both of them suffer from the same body- and self-image issues that would prevent them from going out and meeting people?

Some of them are femmeboy crossdressers that don't hate their bodies
Used to "hang out" somewhere online years ago, turns out 1 out of 10 people were trans. One of them was a full blown psycho SJW too, like protesting stuff in real life.
Just loud, obnoxious mentally ill degenerates making sure you notice them. No strong correlation

Then they probably aren't trans, and are more like roleplayers.
>be balding faggot in his 30s
>on 30th birthday have midlife crisis >no social skills or money to reinvent self by getting expensive car or dating some younger whore
>realize one day someone in guild chat is giving him attention because he's playing female elf
>"A-Are you really a girl, Eliza Wildfury?
>"Y-Yes...I am a girl"
>"H-Here, have some gold. Add me as a friend. Do you mind if I gift you a game haha? Don't worry I can pay for your subscription!"
>beta virgins start showering you with gifts treating you as a Queen
>at first start blogging about feminine shit to keep up the facade
>you do research into female problems/products/clothes to keep up the facade
>it becomes routine
>you buy your first set of panties for the first time
>"Mom, dad, I'm trans. I've always known I was a woman. Give me attention, I'm brave."
>get into relationship with guild leader. he's a virgin too so he doesn't mind you have a dick
>live in fantasy world where you're praised for your bravery
